Whatever you do make sure whoever works on it really knows these inside out. They're at the end of their service lifetime, parts are hard to come by (and expensive), and are beyond the knowledge of a lot of guys because of the design. Most have not been properly serviced and the flame turbulators are broken, giving incomplete combustion. What remains of them are normally seized in place and very hard to replace. The flues are metal and by now, normally corroded, allowing spillage.

Be very careful!

ALL parts are expensive for these piles of poo unfortunately, will need one part changing as a minimum, at least £200-250. Depending on budget, start thinking about replacing it; we replaced one of these last week that on the surface looked to be in good condition but found the flue collector sheared, 2 x burner bolts sheared and the internal parts seized into the heat exchanger!

Why the automatic assumption that everyone will try to rip you off? It may surprise you to know that there are far honest tradesman than there aren't.

As the guys have suggested you'll be throwing good money after bad to get that repaired. Get 3 or 4 quotes for a replacement then come back and tell us what you're offered and for how much. Knowing where in the country you are will help us too. You could also get someone off the forum here to take a butchers.

Beacuse the tradesmen I know are usually lurking somewhere, generally up to no good!
