Toilet won't stop filling

Hi All,

I need a assistance. I have toilet with buttons instead of a handle.

We had issues before we it would not stop filling and just pressing the button a few times would fix that.

That stopped working and then upon inspection the mechanism was covered in black gunk.

This was cleaned and the toilet still didn't stop. I then filled the cistern with warm water and citric acid to see if that would clear any scale that may have built up. The toilet worked for a few days and now will not stop filling unless we manually press the plunger down.

Any advice would be helpful. I am not a plumber.

just replace the flush, most plumbers shops will stock that its not a big job.

There seems to be an updated version in black(!) from other suppliers.
If the above is the same as yours, it should just clip in the existing fitting in the bottom of the cistern (bayonet fitting)
Would be a good idea to clean the old valve seat of calcium deposit while the old valve is out.

If I do go for the updated black version, is there something we should add to the cistern every so often to stop/kill the black gunk (I assume mould) growing there?

We're assuming your problem is the flush valve passing.

Are you clear it's not the cistern overflowing down the central tube of the flush valve - in which case the problem would be with the fill valve with the red cap, not the flush 🤪

Yeah, I did not use the right wording to start with.

The fill valve works as it should.

It is the flush valve. The central seal tube stays in the up (drain) position, instead of dropping down once all the water is gone. If you just touch the tube it drops down and seals.

OK thanks. That's a frustrating fault, and feels like a clean might sort it out. But in my limited experience changing it for a new one would be a much longer lasting repair than fiddling with the old one!

I tried to remove the current mechanism as you mentioned Bayonet fitting. I could only twist it. Not sure if it is stuck, or if I need to press really hard. But since that messing about, it seems to have cured the issue for now😅

Sorry I used the word 'bayonet' because many just turn and you don't have to push down (although that seems to have helped! 🤪). Probably just rotate, I think anti-clockwise, and at some point after rotating a bit, should be able to lift out.
