WC cistern lid siliconed on?

Went to a job recently to replace a fill valve and on going to remove the lid, it wouldn't come off. Deffo not the push button holding it on, not that type; The lid wasn't moving at all. Following my suspicions, I removed the cistern and took it home - only a few hundred yards away - and investigated further on my bench. Fully siliconed the whole perimeter. One whole tub of sealant remover and much patience and swearing at the perp, off it came. I had warned the customer of the possible consequences - broken lid and/or cistern - and no responsibility on my part etc etc. The flush and fill valves were shot as well so it turned into a £100 job. I reckon most guys would have told her new toilet.

Sharp Stanley knife blade, a bit of luck & a gentle persuasive pull & the silicone would have broken its seal no problem!

Would have saved your blushes & the customer some notes!!

I've seen lots of times too! Most of the landlords I do work for ask me to do it to stop tenants stashing drugs in there or fiddling with the syphon or f.o.v!

you could barb wire it or even splodge tile adhesive onto it and shove broken glass into it..

did one recently where the customer brought a display pan and cistern from b and q. I could not get the lid off due to sillycun.

it took the customer 4 weeks to get it off after b and q refused to help, they had to use a wire and saw it through. Sadly i went back to fit the cistern and the float and flush vavles were both faulty with no warrantee its costing more than a new one in the end.

I can actually vouch for the B&Q love of silicone on display bathrooms. They actually have a dedicated team of people going round fitting those displays and they're on good money.

my only query is how did you take the cistern off the wall with the lid stuck on, normally theres a couple of brass screws holding the cistern to the wall!

Our local Plumb Center closed down 2 years ago and they had a bathroom clearance sale. One of my customers went and was sold a discounted bathroom which they asked me to fit. All went OK until I turned the water on to the shower (a MIRA element) and it went everywhere. They had actually sold her a display model which had no cartridge. By that time, Plumb Center was all boarded up and deserted so hard luck. After I had bought a cartridge for it, it worked out more expensive than a new shower.

You'll probably find the cistern is siliconed onto the wall too!

after reading some of the replies on here , it brought back a memory from when i was an apprentice 1983 there was a headline in the sun newpaper, the headline read Flash in the pan on front page, what had happened was some old smelly grumpy boss in a mechanics garage use to always put his cigarette butts down the pan daily and some times he would not flush the loo, so some young lads got the idea to pour a drop petrol in the pan , this they did and the poor old get got his butt burned, the lads got a small fine in court, but it put a stop to this old get putting butts down the pan and not flushing, i can tell you for about a year after i use to go about busting out laughing at this , again the headline in the newspaper flash in pan lol

Local B&Q silicone all their lids in their showroom to stop Joe Public stealing the parts inside the cisterns.

Had a bathroom recently where we had to salvage the basin. It was attached with silicon to the wall. We removed the pedestal, and you could have sat on the basin it was that well fixed. We ended up managing to cheese wire it off with some thin wire.

Bloody thing was on there for life.

We then tiled the floor, and put the basin back. With silicon and screws. On there for life again now!!

i always silacone the back of basins to the wall in local authoroties houses or ones on drywall or partision walls with no fixings
