I have a new 110mm pipe going through the wall with a lintel over it. I have read that you put a plate on each side of the hole to stop vermin and draughts. What do people use? How much gap do you leave around the pipe? Do you fill the space with foam sealant? The floor is solid

Hi
They say you should leave a 50mm gap around the pipe for obvious reasons. But you wouldn't cement mortar risk breaking pipe should there be any subsidence?

if your house is moving around, a leaking soil pipe is a mere bagatelle

I guess you are saying 'fill with cement render and let the lintel do its work'? Which is what I would probably have done had the good Wickes not suggested otherwise. I also read, elsewhere, that you should put compressible board supports at least every other junction in a trench, but haven't...

Just mix up 2 sand 1 cement, fill in the gaps bobs your uncle, never mind them Wickes books

Compressible boards are when its cased in concrete. Just use pea grav when u backfill. Rats are on inside of pipes mate not outside. Wicks books written by polls hands but modernised by sales men[emoji79]

I think you have misunderstood. The space isn't because the house may subside but because the new ground may subside and you don't want a rigid joint at the wall
