what does a plumber really earn ?

I saw this too:
The average UK salary is £26,462 but as you might imagine, there are plenty of jobs which pay considerably more and a lot less than that. Think you know which roles bring in the big bucks? You might be surprised...
Plumber
Stories of plumbers earning six-figure salaries have been rife in recent years - but according to official figures, the average UK salary for plumbers is a more modest but healthy £27,866. However, like many sectors, much depends on the region you're working in and whether you're self employed. In London and the South East, plumbers have been known to charge up to £90 an hour. So, while £100,000 may be far-fetched in many parts of the country, self-employed city plumbers could easily earn £50,000 - making it one of the better-paid trades.

Most plumbers earn about the average wage with £50k being top money for those who work in certain areas.
What is surprising about this? Why did they even bother writing such no-news.

Depending on area and work type a Scottish guy will earn anywhere from £22k ( just qualified, less experience) to £45k+ for a guy with experience who does call outs
It's 10 yrs since I did call outs and when we covered Edinburgh for someone we got £800-1000 from 3.30 fri to 8am mon ( min £20 per job and always 40-50 jobs every weekend)

I make about 800-1250 per week, self employed as long as i get my jobs which is 40k+ When i was books in was 23k per year.

My pay packets are up and down all over this year anything from £100 per week to £1500

see where it is end of the financial year

Scrap annoys me! Make a mess in ur van! But I like the mess it make in the bank! Scrap seems to be "down" a lot more. Last year we were pulling out same as now but seemed like we got a lot more money.

The best money is on Piece Work, always has been. But you need to be fast.
Young time-served guys can make £1.2-£1.5K a week, most firms will not employ course cowboys in Scotland, you need a SNIPEF grade card to get on sites.

I can't see myself going back to an hourly rate, not in this trade anyway!! but I dont want to be doing price work when I'm older, thats why I'm at night school looking to progress into construction management roles

Good luck. I did 10 years as a site manager then project manager. CSCS black card, curb SMSTS, all sorts of quality bull. Managed big and small complex jobs 600k to 275m. Schools shopping, business parks. Thought my job was fine .... Brickes and ground workers used to beg for work..... I was ok because next job was £500m in York ( old Terry's factory) . Went to work one day ...... Redundant. Did some free lance. Now a pipe monkey . I prefer this. Less stress. Not as may muppets who can't read drawings or read spec or even keep helmet on. Money topps of at £65k. Trades always make more as on price work. Why not employ others and grow business. I had few offers for work back in management..... Turned them down . Either I'm a chicken or old enough to have learned grass is always greener and u won't get Ritch working for anyone but u.

I agree, BG, and their subbies are one of the biggest employers of CAT 2 & 3 candidates who have went through the short courses, they are ideal to do service work and build up experience to move onto repairs
