Hi guys and girls.
Hope someone might be able to give some advise on where to go next.
Back in late 2014 i had a problem with an alpha cb33 he boiler. It was tripping the rcd on my consumer unit.
So far to last monday ive had.
Various diverter valves and microswitches. Its had a new pcb. A new pump. A new fan and air valve. New wiring loom and other sensors.
Since dec 5th ive been on to homeserve and alpha heating inovation to get this sorted as i had no heating or hot water. Had no replies from alpha until the day before new years eve when an engineer was booked for new years eve.
He turned up and fitted a new pump but the boiler still tripped. He checked the flue stat again and it was corroded.
He changed the stat and got the boiler firing up and running. He then told me he had put something over the top of the fluestat to stop the secondary heat exchanger leaking onto the stat. He screwed the boiler together and left.
Roll on 4 days later and my wifes having hot water and a bath. I get a phone call at work as there is a huge smell of burning from the boilet. We turn the boiler off at its fused switch and wait till i get in from work. I decide to take the front cover off the boiler to just check its not alight. Upon opening the front cover i find a burner case that has screws missing and not fitted back together properly. So i phone homeserve. Now since nye ive been awaiting a call from alpha regarding the new secondary heat exchanger and fitting. I am not happy to have an alpha engineer back so i tell homeserve i will get a local heating and boiler engjneer to inspect the boiler and make good the damage to which homeserve agree ( cant fault them on that ).
My engineer came yesterday and upon taking the front cover off foubd that the burner casing surround was not fitted back properly. Some of the screws were snapped off and also some missing. The case surround had moved blocking the flue leading to the boiler giving an overheating fault. Due also to the flue being blocked and the surround not being screwed back properly it had blown a flame out the side mrlting the wiring loom up the side of the boiler.
On top of this a plastic bag was found half melted on the burner which had been put on top of the flue stat to stop the drip problem.
My engineer said that if i had kept running this in that state carbon monoxide would be an issue.

Now the alpha engineer was gas safe registered. Ive complained to homeserve and have an ongoing case with the report from my engineer and pictures of the damage to show the case. I would like some advise on where to go next really. I dont know what to do. I still have a boiler with a fault from the flue stat as it still trips. I dont want to deal with alpha as i have lost all confidence in their engineers in my area of sussex.
I feel i am within my rights to ask for a new boiler to be fitted by an engineer and charge homeserve as the one i have at the moment is not fit for purpous and was left in a life threatening and dangerous state. This could have caused a fire of killed my family.
To top it all i still need to deal with alpha who dont want to ring me back now and make excuses about witheld numbers etc.
Do i have a case with gas safe?.
Any advise would help. Can i just say i dont want to get any engineer into trouble with regards to whats happened but i just wantva boiler that works and gives heat and water when needed and doesnt break every day.

Thats.

Alphas are poo 😉
How old is the boiler? How often has it been serviced in its life? If other people have been in it then it may not be fair to dump every sheared screw and stuff on the Alpha guy.
Ps , don't take this the wrong way, but you broke the law by taking the case off. Make sure it's all back together again and either sit tight till it's fixed or fling the scrap away and get a good'un on your wall 🙂.
Cheers Ian

There are some serious failings regarding safety and altering an appliance from the way a manufacturer had intended it to work.

the boiler is too old to place an argument for replacement ordinarily. However multiple visits ongoing faults and some safety issues may give you grounds to put something forward but it won't be quick and you still have no heat or hot water and you might not get it. Personally I'd get it fixed and look at ending the agreement, speak to your indipandant guy that has come out to you and get a boiler with a 7-10 year warranty and have him service it every year

It might not have been the Alpha guy but he should have seen the missing and damage combustion chamber door screws etc and should have ID'd it. If I was you I'd be on the phone to Alpha to report your new engineers findings about how the Alpha chap left your boiler and also be on the phone to the Gas Safe register for the same reasons.

Another satisfied Alpha customer.

Sounds about right there lol.

Ok right i didnt break the law by taking the front off myself without my own gas safe engineer doing it as i told him about the smell he was straight away round to look at it. He took the front off for me so i couod take some pics of the damage.

To be fair the alpha engineer said he saw a couple of screws sheered off when he replaced the fluestat and pump new years eve. He didnt do anything about that by asking if i had some screws that would fit or drilling the sheered ones out to attach new ones. He just sort of clipped the front back on and hoped it held with the 2 remaining screws. Problem there is it wasnt attached down one side and this is why the burner surrlund shifted and blocked the flue and ignited the wiring inside. I cant understand why he would put a plastic bag over a fluestat inside a hot boiler that could melt it?. Thats just commen sense aint it?

I the boiler is 8 years old this year and is serviced every year from an alpha engineer. Its had issues with diverter valves since day 1 and with this last 2 years constant intermittent faults that have been traced down to the fluestat corroding and shorting out. A seal on the secondary heat exchanger seems to be the issue and am awaiting the new part to be fitted.

I am concidering writing to gas safe but i dont want the guy to loose his job is this current climate.

Dan

8 yeas out of it? bin it and buy a decent boiler

If i had 2k sitting here waiting i would have done that by now but i havent so having to go with what i have for now.

All i am asking is to be honest would it be worth reporting to gas safe as well as alpha with regards to the dangerous state it was left in?. Anyone got any details of how to get in contact with gas safe?. Alpha are not returning my calls or emails. At least my engineer has got parts on order for getting it running again for now.

yes in all honesty if it was left in a dangerous manner it does need to be reported

Definitely complain to Gas Safe Register. The practices you have described are dangerous and the engineer needs taking to task. The boiler is probably due for replacement so start budgeting for its final demise. If it keeps tripping the RCD, then this indicates earth leakage, so there is a fault on the boiler which requires attention.

Open a thread up on here, asking one of the forum members local to you to do a boiler swap.
Every cloud has a silver lining.

Easiest way to contact Alpha, Send a recorded and signed for letter to the service manager!

Or try getting them on Twitter.

Twitter seems to be a good one to get a quick response these days as none of the big companies like their dirty washing aired in public.
