Evening all.

Went to a private job tonight to look at a mixer shower with no hot water for a colleague of my Dad.

Shes on a combi so whipped the mains off, stripped shower and removed deposits of what appeared to be rust (not the scale i was expecting). Took me about 45 mins to strip, give it a good clean and refit. I turned the mains back on and tried taps to get air out.

Alas no water from any of the hot drawoff points in the house, all completely dry. (Let alone the shower). Although it seems some of the rust came out of the taps when turned on.

Anyway to cut a long story short after checking the cold main into the boiler and the hot outlet for blockages I was stumped. Even tried pumping the cold back through the hot on her basin mixer. I Rang a mate who does a lot with combis and he came out and looked.

He reckons that there is corroded galvy pipe somewhere on the hot distribution and after refilling the system some of the rust has got into the boiler and the plates are blocked. This would explain the crap in the mixer. It is unforunate that the hot packed up while I was there but thats the way it goes. He is going back tommorow to sort it for her.

I didn't ask for any money tonite as she was shocked at the prospect of now having to pay a LOT more than she bargained for.

At the end of the day this could have happened at anytime, and I have still serviced her shower so once the boiler is fixed it will work fine.

My question is, do you think I should ring her tomorrow and ask her for the cash she owes me or what? I guess she thinks that the problem hasn't been resolved because she is now without hot water, but that isn't my fault. I did my job there so should I still ask for payment?

Sorry for long post.

Cheers guys

After the boilers fixed tomorrow, go back and check the shower again.

Collect the money on your way out.

I think to phone is a bad idea , I would possibly wait after the boilers fixed.

she will expect it sorted its just unfortunate this happened put it right before you ask for payment why could you not remove the plate heat and clean it? anyway i think your mates wrong check the inline cold filter first

I have not done much work on boilers mate so not such a good idea. Im a bathroom fitter and have generally been doing sanitary plumbing and centralised hot water systems.

Don't have too much experienced with combis...hence why I rang him

sounds like galv on the the cold to me, and i would say check inline first as above post

fair enough inline filters normally on the cold iso valve(which you could do) but some are in the hydroblock which is a lot more involved

Standard mate, well Ill bell him tomorrow and arrange with her to re check shower.....Then collect the £ when she satisfied.

Thanks for advice
