I've noticed that most of these 'engineers' fail to say what type of engineer they are. My old neighbour was an engineer, must have only been part time though because he was always in a BT van.

There are 3 stages of being a "Registered Engineer" inline with the Engineering Council UK - Engineering Technician, Incorporated and Chartered.
It depends on your qualifications, experience and technical knowledge. You also need to be registered through your relevant institute. In my case it is the CIPHE.
Personally I'm an Engineering Technician. I could upgrade my self to Incorporated Engineer with continual professional development (CPD) but to be honest, I cant be ersed.
By the way not having a degree is not prohibitive of being a registered engineer as you can undertake further study and attend an interview to assess your knowledge, but would you want to?

Its only for looking good if you set your sights on design or management in a big company IMO.

My Dad was an Engineering Officer in the Merchant Navy and then became a time served Machine tool Engineer. He has no degree, and has probably forgotten more than a lot of us will ever know.
So, he is not an Engineer???
