I hope someone can help, we have a banging noise at night, it does happen during the day but other noises cover it up. we here a click from the kitchen and then a banging noise which you can here on the front wall of the house. the bang is evenly spaced apart with a bang every four seconds and this starts and stops randomly .tried turning the boiler and hot water off at night but the noise still happened. the last few nights i have turned the main stopcock off under the sink and no noise, very confused please help

Water hammer caused by the rise in pressure coming into your house put a line arrestor in

or jumper in stop tap amplified by not many clips in pipework

Have you got a CWSC in loft I would start with the ball valve replacement.
Then as you say turning the stopcock off goes silent maybe replacement will be required
Good luck

thank you i will try looking at that the tank in loft and ball valve looks new. we had a meter fitted outside recently and they replaced the tap with a quarter turn valve. we not sure if this noise has developed since then or if it was happening before
