Thinking it maybe one of those horrid toilets with the 2"x3" plastic shroud things that I hate. Picture will tell.

Your ok mate, new donut seal and away you go if it is leaking from the seal, could try tightening the wing nuts first, they don`t have to be tight tight.
 
Cheers for that! Is it still best to take the old one to the shop abs say, one of those please!
 
Problem now is so many different sizes and shapes so yes start early and take the old one to the plumbers merchants (not B&Q), expect the new one to look thicker as it`s been compressed for a while. Any name or brand you can see on toilet or cistern?
 
Nothing on the porcelain, but says WRAS I think, on the top of a plastic bit inside...
 
wear gloves when you handle the donut otherwise you will get black hands guaranteed
 
If I'm changing components in a cistern & the donut is obscure I re-use it, clean it up, dry it with blue roll, apply silicone both sides & never get a problem!
