Hole in toilet tank for handle isn’t square or circle

My tank is leaking from the handle hole I’ve been trying to find a handle to replace but the hole in the tank isn’t square or circle

The water level shouldn't be high enough to leak out the handle.
The handles aren't watertight.
Is the fill valve leaking and spraying on to it?

As above though, photos would be helpfull

Your overflow arrangement should be below this height, then it can’t happen - unless the inlet valve is squirting onto it as Snowhead mentioned.
