can a solder joint be re-soldered if there is water in the pipe? ive often heard people say it can but ive never tried , ive got a weeping solder joint below the drain off valve.

no it cant water in the pipe solder will never take

agree with GM you cannot solder a joint with water in the pipes, most people have tried this at some stage just to test this out, if you are worried and don't want to drain down then just freeze the pipe, drain and re solder.

Why would they even try? It's obvious that the temperature of the tube isn't going to exceed 100 deg. C., while the solder we use will have a melting temperature in excess of 200 deg. C.

that i couldn't tell you, but when i was learning our tutor made us do it so everybody understood that it couldn't be done

The Guys (or Gals) are right canna be done ..... Just cut through the fitting and get the water out and then unsolder the fitting & replace or just cut it out and use a compression fitting .. simples!!!

cheers guys , thought it was a long shot. just cracked the seal on the stopcock and drained down from there then replaced the fitting with a new drain off valve.
