is it possible to use tile backer boards on masonry?

hi all

i was fixing a leak in my loft shower room. the photos show after i had removed the plaster off the walls. on the edging photo i've measured 20mm from brick to shower tray. on the shower facing side i've measured 13mm. tile is 7mm thickness. i was wondering, rather than pack it out with cement mix, could i use those water resistant backing boards instead? or even a bit of cement mix and then backing board?

Yes and you can add screws with the big wedi washers aswell

would you advise me cut the boards and do a staggered approach, or just cut the board to size and add. its only the exposed areas im adding boards to, especially where the tiles meet the shower tray

Doesn’t really matter then as you only stagger if your putting boards above etc

So just cut to size

That is what I would use no need to stagger anything on a repair, prime the area to be repaired then around the bath mix up some tile adhesive and use that to level off allowing it to cure before then sticking a section of cement faced foam insulation board, just to give you a idea heres one I'm doing mapie adhesive is ok long as its a flexible one fix the board every 300 mm with washers screws and red rawl plugs . oh, quick question, what size rawl plugs should i use? i take it the screws should be minimum 50mm into the wall, i have some screwfix turbo gold 100mm left, about half a box, would that do?

They would do and yes stops the wall sucking all the moisture out

Yes as Shaun said sbr or mapie primer they do a litre container in B&Q or Topps tiles, they also do wedi board in 6mm and the wedi washers the red plugs are fine, you will need a good grout and a Sanitary silicone I prefer Dow Corning 785 its more hard wearing but bal is good from Topps and use a smoothing tool 6mm blue roll and wipes 2mm spacers ,a sponge for washing off grout and buffing cloths , no underfloor heating on this one but my last one did I do all my own tiling and prep

thanks for the tips and advice. actually i sourced some 10mm boards that suit me better. unfortunately the one in B&Q are running out, it was called aqua dry backer board. however there are plenty out there i've seen. i found these rawl plugs in my tool box, would these be ok to use? i'll see if i can source some more items to at least get the backing boards to the wall.

hi all, i was doing some last minute calculations, and i think i may have got a bit carried away and confused. so i need some further help. i don't think i will be able to use 10mm backing boards, so i need to double check some figures with you.

wall 1: has a thickness of 13mm from wall to edge of shower tray
wall 2: which is the edging on the photos is 20mm

the tiles measure 8mm thickness

wall1: so even if i use 6mm backing board and the tile, that's already 14mm, and i haven't factored in adhesive

wall2: i could use 6mm or 10mm board, however i think its a waste to get a single large board and cut a small piece and throw the rest away

i want to know if i've got these figures and thinking right, and what's my options now?

6mm will do it in my view where its low build out with just tile adhesive leave to set then fit tile any deeper use the backer board . Kop

i hope all is well. regarding above, i'm finally going to complete this job. i have removed all the old adhesive back to brick work. i was wondering, do i need SBR on the brick work? i'm planning to use this tile adhesive, im not sure if it already has SBR or equivalent pre-mixed. can you please advise?
