hi there.

i have a potterton performa 24 about 9 yrs old. not a condensing boiler.
recently it stopped firing up for hw and ch.
local corgi guy came round to fix it and said he would come back with the parts to fix it.
he didnt seem to know exactly which part is at fault.
the boiler seems to make all the normal noises when started until it gets to the fan. the fan turns about half a turn, then it stops.
pump and thermistor is fairly new.
does anyone know which part is at fault.
he said it could be one of many parts. pressure switch, pcb, fan, etc etc.
im a bit worried he will change many parts before finding the culprit part.
is that normal or should he be able to find out which part or parts are at fault before changing them..?
thanks for any replies

albert

In my opinion you need get someone out who has a better idea of fault finding/diagnosis who with his knowledge, aid of manufacturers instructions and manufacturer help line can narrow the fault down.
In the majority of cases the fault can be narrowed down to one part.
Sounds like he is just winging it to be honest.

If fan gives a quick pulse, Get him to replace "The Brains"
I HAD A INSTANTS BRAIN IN MY HAND YESTERDAY SHORTLY AFTER SWEARING WHEN I DISCOVERED THAT THE EV HAD FAILED AND ITS A he VERSION UNDER SERVICE CONTRACT BY ME

some of the earlier models had a high limit stat that would pop , if the pressure went down but the later models had a thermal high limit stat unlike the baxi 80 eco model .Look on the left hand side next to the thermister and also make your plumber check the venturi , it melts and what the symtoms would be just the fan keeps on spinning .
I were repairing about 6 to 8 baxis a day in 2002 with the high limit stat problem , mades loads of money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just wondering about the replies from gasman.
not sure if he is taking the mickey out of me, another member, or my corgi guy, or even all of us.

hi bspareltd
the overheat stat use to need reseting about once a yr long ago. has not needed resetting for a long while now. its had a new thermistor but not a new overheat stat. he didnt look at the venturi and the fan does not spin at all except for about half a turn when trying to start the boiler then is cut out.
i hope my corgi guy is not a member here

Anyone that has qualified to work on gas boilers, has been deemed to have the basic safety knowledge to work on boilers.
This does not mean they have the skill set to identify faults on the many boilers out there.
These skills come with years of experience, help from peers, manufacturers and reading.

No he's not. Gasman is held in extremely high regard by regular posters on the forums. All advice he gives should be listened to. Very carefully.
