Just found out my sister sponsors one of them snow leapords. £3 per month.
Just recieved a letter saying that the direct debt did not get paid this month and they will try to take payment along with a charge of £18.50 on the 10th of March. Failure to keep up you payments may affect your credit rating.
Unreal!!!
Got me thinking about charies and found out some intresting facts.

A lot of charities charge 10-60% to administrate donations.
Some American onec take upto 92%
Last year children in need got £75million in donations, £47.5million spent on admin, wages, advertising, legal fees, pension and investments.
Sounds unreal but not as bad as some where nothing goes to charitiy.

Fees for high street 'chuggers' eat up millions donated to charities | Mail Online

Or our ex prime ministers tony blair faith foundation:
£3.608Million in donations £3.25Million in admin.

If you do donate to charity might be worth checking how much of your cash actually gets there.

I stopped giving donations to bigger charities a couple of years ago when I found out that most charity bosses earn six figure sums and have huge fancy offices. I now give to local smaller charities that are run by volunteers, every couple of months I buy 40/50 pounds worth of cat and dog food and give them to a local animal sanctuary or the local cats protection, and give to a local hospice. Chuggers normally get a two word answer.

Agree about local charities some local charties only get by with local donations.
As for the homeless guy!!
I was working in the South African Embassy in Trafalger Sq. Was asked for some spare change by a guy lying down on street. didnt have any, but did actually get him a fiver out of the cash point machine he was lying next to.
Got pulled up by a bike cop and asked if I was buying drugs. Explaned situation, He said to give donations to "Shelter" charity for the homeless. As he was not a card registed member. Told him sleeping bag was proof enough for me.
Ironic really and quite sad. Yes you could get a fiver out of a cash machine in the 90s.

The world has gone mad with charities.
I remember Live Aid, and was probably the first time I had ever heard of Ethiopia.
There is now over 200 registed charities for Ethiopia alone. Google it and see.
Every private school and university has charity status and most public school is now getting Foundation status so the rich can make money off us. Right now, over 160,000 Registered charties in the uk alone.

One of my customers runs a local charity and he's making a fortune from peoples good will. I am sure its al legal and above board but he must be on at least 100k and he only seems to work part time.

facts arent quite right re public schools, you certainly arent paying towards them in any means or form.

imo, most people that give to advertised 'charity' are those who earn too much, feel guilty and need to portray a sense of self worth to others who may be watching or those within ear shot of a conversation.
hence why there are 160k charities about, all 'providing a service' for the cause....giving those people well paid jobs and creating an industry of 'the feel good factor' when we all know the receivable monies are a fraction of whats collected!! crazy.

imagine a parent who has lost their job after ill health, cant pay the bills or feed the kids for 3-4 days & desperate, it is seen in India and the u.k, they ask people to please help them, only difference is in the u.k you will be arrested for 'begging' because we all know people here in the u.k are well off and do not live in poverty!!

does my head in

Public schools like the comprehensive I went to we do pay for mate.
Lets say I want to set up a Free school like "Ark schools" The goverment give me £4M for every £1M I put in upto a value of 16million.
Then I have to lease the school to the Department for Education for a min 7 year contract. Every child that comes to school the goverment give Approx £5000 per yr per pupil. So that school is a Charity/ Foundation status. but set up and ran with Tax payers money. The best part is after 7yrs That school that cost £20M is 100% owned by me. I could sell it as I not only own the school but also the land. I know It sounds Crazy but check it out through Department for education site.

Public schools are the vernacular for private schools in the good old uk, if your referring to a comp as a public school you have it all wrong unless your in America where the reverse is true, still with me 🙂 When your chatting about academy status for schools you need to consider what is actually being made available to those running them. you may think that after 7 years you own it all, but the problem is the monies actually then being given to you per child doesnt match up too well with the costs required to run the school successfully, hence why the government is now taking them back in hand as happened with 10 last week.

15 years ago I was a bursar for an lea school of 1750 kids and we got something like 1000 per kid per year on average to run the school, pay staff, repair buildings etc against a public school pupil who's parents were paying around £10000 to £12000 to keep their kid educated along with the taxes to keep the kids in my school educated.

The pot of money hasnt changed from the government, just the way they allocate it and sadly it wont work long term as it isnt enough.

Trebled this year

Most independent schools, particularly the larger and older institutions, have charitable status. The Independent Schools Council say that UK independent schools receive approximately £100m tax relief due to charitable status whilst returning £300m of fee assistance in public benefit and relieving the maintained sector (state schools) of £2bn of costs.[SUP][8][/SUP] The Charity Commission is currently formulating tests of public benefit for charitable schools as required by the Charities Act 2006.
That should clear up public/private school difference we are having.

This is a link showing money for schools has trebled this year to 1.5bn average cost of free school £6.5m
BBC News - Free schools budget trebled to £1.5bn, report shows

Just talking about new builds and what tax payers money is avalable

You will find a lots changed in 15yrs your £1000 pp is more like £5000 now. Thats on top off The, say average £6.5m to build the school in the first place. With charity status you now can bring in tax free money from anyone wanting to use up there charitable tax allowance.
Staff: You do not need to employ qualified teachers unlike state school.

Staff Wages: You are not governed on how little or much you have to pay staff.

School Meals: Unlike state school there are no guide lines on what you can sell sweets, Chips, Lucozade Etc..

The LEA also recieve no goverment funding per pupil to provide Transport busses Etc.. This is to come out of the budget they have.
With all that you will make money on your fixed contract for opening a free school.

The fact you were a Bursar of a school you might find the following links intresting.

Cash for classrooms: Michael Gove plans to let firms run schools for profit - UK Politics - UK - The Independent

Secret memo shows Michael Gove's plan for privatisation of academies - Education News - Education - The Independent

if you don't pay the staff equivalent or more than national standards, you wont have any,the charitable status isnt there for donations but the fact it relieves the school from paying full business rates and other costs. The academies will only work if they can continue to get gov allowances needed to pay for all the goodies needed to be successful. As for public schools costing the tax payer anything, as you correctly point out, the overall benefit is to the tax payer, not the other way round once you take everything into account. re sweets etc. if the heads any good then theyll ban all the crap such that the kids dont run around the ceilings, seen it both sides and not allowing redbull in the place doesn't half improve pupil behaviour, but this was introduced at a public/private school as a trial that stayed on

hi guys its hurdy, my view on charity is that charity begins at home, makes me sick to think that we cant even look after our own people, but send millions abroad to look after other countries who idont personaly give a toss about, money should be spent looking after people with dasabilaties home lessness, the vunarble ,the elderly and all other social problems home first.:2guns:

Last few years I have started collecting charity badges etc I have about 1500 to date here are a few of them...regards Turnpin IMG_20140306_132051.jpg

....

I agree that you should choose your charities carefully, just cos it says charity you can't be sure most of the money is going where you want it to.
BUT
Charities are required to publish details of how they spend money and the best and biggest often spend less than 10% on admin.
And don't forget some of that is on staff wages - so a good thing, boosting economy.

Here is an example from Oxfam - 9%:
http://www.oxfam.org.uk/blogs/2012/09/how-much-of-my-money-do-you-spend-on-admin

Red cross about 5%
And Plan (sponser child in poor countries) about 20%
