Hi guys I am in need of some help, I have a 24 year old Boulter 50/70 utility oil boiler (camray) with a Riello 40 burner.

If it was a diy service I assume you don’t have a flue gas analyser. Difficult to set them up without one. Get a service engineer. Nothing wrong with the Riello 40 burners. I have the same. Where are you?

Leaky overflow pipe at loft level but no water tank in my loft.

Are you sure you don‘t have a small header for your heating system? They’re not very big (about a square foot) and could be tucked away.

    Who uses inserts

The inserts I got from HWOS are certainly not loose. So snug they have to be encouraged to go in.

    Qual oil pipe

Shaun - I would agree for a bottom-outlet tank. Conduit would provide no protection from the heat of a fire. It'll have to be copper down into the ground. Then swap to copper inside an inspection chamber. What we need is a fire rated sleeve to go over the plastic pipe to allow it to be brought...

    Qual oil pipe

The above are all good reasons to only use top-outlet tanks. I run a single run of qualpipe underground then above ground inside 20mm metal conduit to a glanded box. Connection to copper is inside the box. Qualpipe is protected from UV and no underground joints. Of course the qualpipe above...

Cold Water only during power cut - why??

Depends on your storage tank. Mine is a sealed unit and uses cold water pressure to dIsplace the hot so I can (and have) had hot water during our many power cuts. if it’s likely to be a regular thing then suggest you have a discussion with a plumber. If it’s a one-off then...

    Overpriced OFTEC training course....

Looking round and normal fee seems to be £650 or thereabouts. I see WB do a 2 day renewal for £250... which is pretty good Value. Shame it’s so far from me. So I could fly down, stay in a hotel, and fly home, and it would still be half the price that bunch in Aberdeen want to charge.

Very impressed with the service by Kane. My analyser was posted back to me the same day received. Free roll of printer paper and a couple of tea bags👍

Recommend me a fuel transfer pump.

Although it is potentially a high pressure pump, it was only ever going to be pumping into an open ended pipe. So the discharge pressure of the pump is limited to a the head and frictional losses. As the flow rate would be relatively low, I considered the frictional losses negligible. To be...

Recommend me a fuel transfer pump.

Update. I ended up cobbling something together with a high capacity vehicle fuel pump I had kicking about. Made a T piece so I could feed the boiler and also transfer to the new tank at the same time. Took a while but it did the job.

    Sprang a leak today.

As I do my own servicing I doubt I could have proved that it had been done. My existing tank was installed when I moved in, and must be at least 20+ yrs old. I was planning on moving it soon, so think I might splash out on a new top entry. I shudder to think what could have happened.

    Sprang a leak today.

Bottom outlet tanks are still very common over here. No requirement for catchment pit. Top outlet tanks make a lot of sense.
