Hi everyone, I'm a newbe here but I have a problem with my Powermax 155x , No, No, come back, I need advice please :^) All it is is there is a slight leak from the pressure switch at the front of the boiler, a small limescale deposit can be seen building up and dripping onto the base. The DHW and CH are all 100% working. The gas safe guy Ive found to fix this leak initially told me that the replacement switch would probably be around 20 - 30 quid. Today he tells me the switch will cost £130 + . Can this be right ? £130 quid just for a pressure switch ? Not including labour etc, just the switch. I don't want to lay the guy off as I can't find anyone else with the balls to even look at it. Any advice much appreciated. RR

Get another quote from another tradesman if you think its too high.

It's possible he doesnt really want to do it so has given the high price to either put you off or motivate him instead.

do you mean the plastic flow switch that sits on top? they have gone up big style and if he is getting it from g.a.s he is giving it to you trade

This switch is about halfway up towards the left of the boiler and is screwed into a copper pipe and has what I think might be a spade terminal on it. Of course I realise that other installations of this same boiler might differ in respect of pipework positions etc, anyway, if it was a pressure sensor for any motor car say, it wouldn't be more than a tenner.. . I think I'm just going to have to swallow it, and pay up ! Thanks to all who took time to reply.

Trying to post some photos of the powermax here but I don't know if I've managed it.
Any advice on this leak appreciated

Actually the first visit was supposed to be for a service but he didn't actually DO the service even though he says its probably never been serviced since new, he tested it for emissions gas leaks etc and pronounced it safe to use and duly wrote out the safe to use cert, so he was paid for the cert, and so the next visit to fix the leak is seperate.

he has done a safety check not a service,a full service is required every 2 years and this includes turberlater replacement and a new burner gasket the switch you have leaking is a dhw flow switch think this is it [DLMURL="http://www.gas-spares.co.uk/Catalogue/POWERMAX-BOILER-SPARES/Free-standing-range/140-range/140-FOV/FLOW-SWITCH"]FLOW SWITCH - Gas Appliance Spares (Preston) Ltd[/DLMURL]

Wow, I see it but I can't believe it, So he was right about that switch! I dread to think what the service is going to cost. What do you guys think would be a fair ballpark figure for a proper service for one of these assuming there are no hidden problems. Don't worry, I know its difficult to be precise but I would just like to be forewarned so that I don't fall over when I finally find out. RR

14 quid per turberlater you will need 6 or 8 assuming its 8,then a burner gasket at god knows what if your flue run is visible in your loft that WILL need checking and i would advise you have a co alarm fitted up there as well if this guy does not want to do the full service try here Baxi UK

Welcome to the world of the plumber / gas installer. Some of the prices for spares make your eyes water and appear to be getting worse. It only helps to fuel the public belief that we are rip off merchants.
