I recently moved into an area that according to the neighbours has a few powercuts , it would be a good idea to put some sort of anti - surge protection at the boiler spur to save the boilers board , there seems to be plenty types available but can anybody recommend one ( Theres a brand new CU with rcd protection )

Maybe worth asking if an spd could be fitted to the fused board tbh if it’s brand new it might be fitted ?

If there's a spare slot in the CU the manufacturer will have a range of SPDs but IME this is an expensive way to go (several hundred quid is not unusual) and not usually necessary unless the property is supplied with overhead cables or has special risk factors.

For a boiler, I'd consider leaving the outlet as it is and using a Type III device of an 'adapator' or 'extension lead' type. IME, the problem with SPDs is they only protect you from the first big surge and then need replacing. So, you want one with an indicator light that confirms is is operating correctly and is relatively cheap and easy to change. Something like this perhaps:

You don't really need three outlets but I'm not sure whether single outlet ones are available from decent branded manufacturers. I've not come across one. Avoid anything that doesn't come from a well-known manufacturer with a reputation for good quality products.

Several hundred quid 😀 where you getting your prices from should be a couple of hundred max as the units are around £50 plus vat

I only use Hager these days, and it is a bit pricey:

but the quality is IMO superb. If you need a SPD in a CU it's normally there because there's a risk to life so you don't want something your sparks picked up on eBay.

Yes think so but surely the boiler spur would have to be on its own circuit

When it's in the consumer unit it's on the incoming main so protects the whole board.
