Hi there.

Was advised by BG to get a powerflush on my system when my heating became very cold before Xmas (10 rad house and could get 2 hot). They couldn't do it till mid-January so took a recommendation of a plumber from a friend. He powerflushed the system, added a magnaclean and a bypass but since then the system has been sporadic and lots of either cycling or kettling by the boiler and pumping over.

The plumber recommended a new boiler as he felt the heat exchange in our boiler (Potterton Promax HE 24) was shot. After looking on forums I took a magnet to the pipes by the cold feed and it stuck to the pipes, I assume showing a ferrous build up. The plumber changed the pipe yesterday after we asked him to but we still have the same problem and he still recommends a new boiler. I've just taken a magnet to the pipes again and yet again it's magnetic in places. Also have just fired up the boiler and get 4 rads on my top floor hot and nothing else and system is still pumping over.

The plumber is saying if I put a new boiler in then there will be no more crud and debris coming off the heat exchange and he'll powerflush one more time and hey presto it'll all work again but I wonder if that's right.

This is a photo of the system. The red dots are where I can get a magnet to stick to it. [DLMURL]http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/6599/pipesl.jpg[/DLMURL]

If anyone has any ideas about the next course of action I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm in Hertfordshire by the way.

You should clean all the rubbish out of the system before you replace the boiler, the existing boilers heat exchanger is not the cause of the system blocking again, seems like a poor power flush, check the pipe work near the pump, pump valves and pump water ways, maybe restricted, causing pressure build up and over pumping,if system that bad put some chemical in system and let run for a week ,then power flush again, once system clean as said you can think about a new boiler if required and keep magna clean installed, although move it to the return at the boiler

imho

Sounds like the plumber has done a poor job, I would find out which pump he has used and how he has done it as if the system is still cold and not working properly then he simply hasn't done his job properly,
Where are you based as i will come and do for free (except petrol costs) to help you out. The main problem seems to be that he has moved some of the dirt into the boiler giving you the kettling and rumbling noises from the boiler.

He should sort this out free of charge and i hope you have not paid him yet as he simply has not done the job he promised.

I really hate plumbers who do not do the job properly and as said before i will gladfully come and sort out for free.

The picture is not great but the magnet should not be sticking to the pipes. I would ring him up and ask him what training he has had, which pump he used, how he done it and what british standard he did the work to and if you can have a certificate that the system meets BS7593

If he refuses then ask for a refund.

sorry to be so harsh but they really annoy me when they do not do a job properly, especially when i have been at properties from 7am to 8pm solving issues like these after a power flush and these companies think it is ok to leave half way thropugh a job.

Thanks for that. In the end the fella who recommended him (old fella not registered anymore and uses him for gas work only) popped round and spent a few hours sorting it out for free.

Looking on forums it seems that the pipes around the cold feed can block up after a powerflush so I tend to agree that this guy was either inexperienced or was not wholly telling the truth.
