Hi all,

My name is Simon and I'm currently retraining as a plumber. Only just started 5weeks or so ago. Distance learning course!

Currently employed as a civil servant but my heart isn't in it anymore, and neither are the career opportunities that were there when I started.

Don't really know what I'm looking for specifically on the the forum other than advice from fellow trainees and competent plumbers who are working in the field.

Currently doing a simple assignment for installation of pipework, fittings, ect upto but not including the cistern.

Think I understand the drawing!

Hi Simon, you need to get out with someone and get your hands dirty, your not going to find out what this job involves from distance learning, I've been doing this job for to meny years now and believe me its not a glamour's job by any means & and please don't expect to earn anything like what you are now, and no job security its going to take you a few years B4 anyone will even think of employing you, Please think long & Hard B4 you give up what you have. Just look on this site at guys that have qualification's coming out of there ears and cant get a job. Best of Luck. :dots:

As a real life recent example .......
Guys works from the office for 10yrs so has technical knowledge of the pumps, decided he wanted to work with us on the tools so did an NVQ at local college which the company paid for, now he is doing his out on the road training and he hasn`t got a hope in hell because it`s not all like it said at college.

Oh forget. Who wants a ticket for my first trip?

I`ll chip in with a little bit of cash if Croppie, APP and Dan goes on the first flight, want Dan to experience the countdown with a 5 second delay after the 1 and before the button is pushed mind you.

As long as APP doesn't bring his drinks trolley.

No its not a 6 week one its a full on course with gas safe and everything. I have made contact with plumbing companies regarding work experience ect on my days off.

And trust I have thought about it long and hard. I do not wish to be assaulted on a daily basis, threats to my life, watch my friends get assaulted anymore.

The course has weeks away at a time in workshops learning the ways to solder, bend and flare ect.

Assaulted ? physically A good chance, verbally lots of times, Shafted from various organisations who want your money B4 you can earn a living ! All the time! Volumes of regulations that even the people who write them don't understand ! Spending weeks in nice workshops wont prepare you for the real world. Coming from the environment your used to will be a big culture shock, if you hit the construction sites in the middle of winter, Or working in houses that when you leave all you want to do is burn all your clothes ! Find out what they mean about Gas safe, just because your doing a full time course doesn't give you automatic admittance on to the register
