Hi everyone - this is my first post :blush5: apologies for the length of post - I'm not a plumber but a householder.

I have an Ariston mircrogenus 23 combi boiler in my home which was there since before I bought the house (it was installed in 2004) - I was a little surprised as I thought that they only made washing machines!

However, all was well until last year when the following started happening at around the same time - not sure if it is all a coincidence:

  • When the hot water is running continuously the burners would go off for 10 seconds or so and then reignite (I'm sure they had burned continuously up to then)
  • When I turn off the hot water tap, after it has been running for a while, there is what sounds like a 'woosh' of water or something inside of the boiler
  • With the central heating turned on the burners would sometimes not 'fire up' - there would be a click (electronic ignition?) but then the boiler would freeze (with the pump even going dead) - it would then pause and try again and it will usually get itself going automatically - this happens every hour or so. Occasionally the red light would go on and I would have to manually reset it

I had an Ariston recommended engineer out to look at it in the spring and, of course, it wouldn't show any symptoms while he was here - he gave it a bit of a clean and a general service, but the problem persists.

What I would like to ask you guys is:

  • What you think the problem is? - so that if i called out another plumber I wont be taken for a ride
  • Is it worth repairing at all or should I just get a new combi boiler

Many thanks!

Thank you all for the replies - I wouldn't have chosen an Ariston myself but I inherited it. I'll see how it goes and if it starts to annoy me I'll get quotes for a replacement. Cheers!
