Went to price up a job yesterday removing an old boiler from the kitchen, the flue ran up boxing in to the cylinder cupboard then up out the roof, customer wants new combi in the cupboard where cyclinder is so the flue all has to be removed, I take it I need to call in a professional to remove the asbestos?

Yes as it will need to be air tested afterwards and you need a special license to carry it

The dangers of asbestos are well known but when it comes to asbestos cement products these dangers are often overstated. Do a risk assessment. Is it possible to spray with water and dismantle without breakage. If so leave householder to arrange disposal with local council.

I don't disagree that bonded asbestos pipe might be overstated but having seen videos of pipe joints (asbestos rope) being separated whilst trying to spray them and what actually gets wet I would suggest leaving it to a licenced person as the document suggests.

Very soon I'll be going to my 7th funeral for asbestosis from colleagues.

I've been through all the types of training, fitted and removed it over the last 36 years and seen modern day guys be really blase about it. You could do a risk assessment to observe any rope but then it's exposed if you don;t have the correct paste.

It's your call but once you start taking chances it gets further and further from where it should be and before you know it your stood having a sandwich whilst stood in it like I saw a few years ago with the guy telling me I was over reacting (as I probably am here).

Customer should always pay for removal as it's there's. If they say the other quote said it was ok then I would ask are they willing to have that sort of person in their house!
