Basin waste concerns.

View the thread, titled "Basin waste concerns." which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

I need to install this type of two-piece waste next week. Clearly the mating surface of the lower piece tightens up against the bottom of the basin with a washer in between. The washer provided is one of those thin foam type and although I have fitted these without problem in the past, I am concerned that it might not be thick enough to make a decent long-term seal. Does anyone recommend a tip or two with making a watertight connection? PTFE around the inner thread, for instance? I usually avoid Plumbers Mait but maybe there is a need here? Would it be wise to use silicone sealant anywhere? Thanks in advance for any help. 😉

I use basin mates every time never an issue. Sold by B&Q but cheaper at Toolstation especially if you buy several as van stock.

Silicone is not a waste sealant but it seems many people use it. I have no idea why, plumbers I think tend to regard it's use on wastes as a DIY job. It is much better to use a waste mate made for the job.:yes:

The thin foam gasket normally goes under the top of the waste between that and the basin.

The bottom seal usually of a thicker rubber that would fit in the slot on the bottom ring
protruding a couple of mm to get a good seal against the basin when tightened.

You may be looking at the wrong seal. Check the pack for the heavier seal.

i always use mait under flange of a basin grate, when tightened underneath the excess squeezes out then run a screwdriver round edge to remove. then make a ball with this and dab at any scraps remaining because best thing to remove mait ...is mait!

when installed i usually smear a bit of silicone around the underneath nut as a bit of extra security against water running down threads (on wastes with o/f)

Thanks for your responses, guys.

Bernie2: Well the product I use this Dow Corning 785. Here is what the blurb says:
DOW CORNING® 785 Sanitary Silicone Sealant
APPLICATIONS:
• A one-part, silicone sealant specifically designed for the sealing of sanitary fittings, including baths, showers, sinks, urinals and ceramic tile joints. This product is mildew and fungus resistant.

Yes I do carry a few waste/basin mates and usually use these for sealing older basin wastes that have started to leak and very reliable they are, too. But I think I might be well missing an item in the kit provided – namely a chunky rubber washer. If it comes to it then a waste mate it will be.

heliotrope: Quite right, the foam gaskets do usually between the top flange and the basin but with this item there is a large ‘throat’ shaped washer that can only be fitted to the top part. Yes, I think there should be a purpose built washer to fit the groove. The diagram shows likewise but only a thin foam washer is provided.

system3: I have always found PM to be pretty mucky, claggy stuff to apply that seems to get everywhere. Maybe that is just a personal thing. Also, I have noticed a few times that PM, over time, has appeared to become brittle and ceases to be watertight. I remember hearing somewhere (ages back) that PM had been removed of “oils” it had included previously (I think, for environmental reasons). That said, I cannot seem to find any reference to this on the web. I did use some recently re what seemed to be an oversized outlet on a WC cistern in order to ‘pack out’ the larger than usual gap twixt the siphon thread. Absolutely fine for that.

vipey: I have certainly never used Boss Green for basin wastes though I know some plumbers who recommend it for compression fittings.

kay-jay: Thanks alot. Perhaps I'll give I'll give it (the PM) another bash. Cheers.

Thanks again, guys. :wink5:

dont knock it till ya tried it lol , i no its for threaded joints , plumbers mait seems to leak after couple weeks boss green is more solid than boss white and forms a very nice seal like it or leave it works for me ;
