I've got a Baxi Solo 15 HE which seems to have a couple of problems.

1) Intermittantly, it makes a noise which can best described as a foghorn just before it ignites
and,
2) Intermittantly, it doesn't actually ignite at all. It tries 2-3 times, then locks out. Although it hasn't done that for over 1 week now. It did it on the day I was having a visit from someone checking it on behalf of npower, so it didn't get a clean bill of health. :-(

Does anyone have an idea of what could be making the foghorn type noise?

It's just been serviced/inspected as part of the hometeam visit on 21st Feb.

The paperwork says 14.54 KW operating pressure, combustion details:

O2 4.9
CO2 9.1
CO ppm 45
Flue 48.8c
INLT 15.1c
NETT 33.7c
EFF 102.2
Losses 1.5
XAIR % 30.6
CO/CO2 0.0004
PRS mbar 0.01

What was the fault with the foghorn noise as mine has now started to do the same once or twice a week, but not when I have had an engineer out twice.

I had this problem and a very simple solution. I'd cleaned out the burner, checked the spark gap. Re fitted everything and fired up with my finger closing the fan inlet (left) just about 5mm up from the bottom, It worked. So I did it with a strip of masking tape 5mm up from the bottom of the inlet. I guess the flame is lifting off and this is just enough to stop it without affecting the flame when running. It could be the burner holes get larger with age causing it, or the thermister not picking up the temperature right, but this works and costs nothing.

Are you gas safe registered? So you have used masking tape in your boiler? What was the analyser read outs? You do realise that manufacturers spend alot of money to make these boilers work correctly and safely before they go on sale and you decide that you know better.

:iamwithstupid:
ramming a load of masking tape into your ears will also get rid of the fog horn noise - but you'll need the smaller width roll for this.

one melted baxi hanging off the wall

I'm sure some of the advice proffered here is made up!! The foghorn noise is probably your flue seals being as your ratios are ok. Gas valve can do the same tho'. Not firing will be dirty electrodes.

Yeah the bodge to fix it was free but repairing it would cost a bit but it will work and be safe

So now which one do I choose? Oh I think i'll bodge it together run the risk of possibly killing my family, friends and neighbours or blowing up the house. If your lucky end up having a nice big bill at the end of it to replace the boiler.

Some people should just not be allowed to think!
