Becoming a fully qualified plumber?

If i complete Plumbing and Domestic Heating City & Guilds 6189 Diploma Level 2 will I then be classed as a fully qualified plumber or do you need to complete level 3 as well?

You'll be classed as someone who has passed C&G 6189 Level 2. There is a lot more to the profession than the first qualification. That being said, it's a good start but you really need hands on tools to know what it's all about.

Level 2 does qualify you, level 3 is advanced. best to get level 3 because its more in depth and give you a better understanding of systems etc (on paper) i think youll get your gas with it..

to me level 2 gives you the skills to install bathrooms, hang a rad change a tap, stacks etc and prepares you for level 3. your qualified and its a good start but level 3 is where its all at...

Level 3 builds on what's you were taught in level 2. You can't go straight to sixth form.

Found this on the JIB site regarding which qualifications you need for different cards: "City & Guilds Basic Plumbing Studies 6128/6129 are not acceptable for a Blue or Gold card."

The CIPHE site states something similar about what they consider to be a qualified plumber.

Get an apprenticeship and learn from people who already know because sitting in a class room really isnt the best way to learn because they give you all the best cases when learning, out on the tools and you fine many problems that they cant teach you, and you never stop learning either so you have to keep on top form or else you'll get a bad name for yourself.

That course is all on site just have a person come out and excess you and signs the portfolio

I have the 6129 and I'm on site work got the job because I was pretty much in the right place at the right time. It's not all about quilifications it's about experience on the tools as many have said.

Getting work is mainly 25% qualifications and 75% reputation and track record.

Qualifications alone won't get you work

So what would you advice to do work for free?

Not necessarily (though lot of people do come onto this forum offering to work for free to gain experience). See if you can get a job with a plumbing company, even if it's part time or on an ad-hoc basis. Effectively you need to have the equivalent experience of an apprenticeship before you can start off on your own.

Experience is essential. You could have all your paper qualifications and get top marks but with no experience you will get nowhere.

As you so often keep me up-date, I for once can return the favor, the City & Guilds 6189 Diploma Level 2 & 3 is the replacement qualification for the old 6129 Tec Cert & 6089 NVQ the idea was to combine both the college & on-site stuff to stop training centers just offering the off the job training which was not recognized as being a qualified plumber by the industry.

Unfortunately they seem to have bowed to pressure & now also offer the 6035 (just the college side) so the confusion will still continue hear in England.

So just to confirm the 6189 Diploma contains on-site assessments which have to be completed to pass the qualification & so effectively replaces the old 6089 NVQ.
Experience is of course always required to be able to work as a plumber, the problem as you know, is how do we measure it !!

You will now need to hold a minimum of a Level 2 6189 City & Guilds Diploma in plumbing, there are a few others but not for the plumbing side.
PS.There will also be, very shortly, another qualification provider (exam board) thank god, cos C&G are losing it big time.
