TITCHY22

Spend, spend, spend, I am feeling giddy , after splashing out(no pun intended) on a new set of bath and sink taps , I was not happy ,the ceramic sink taps were terrible , poor flow etc. I decided i would buy another more suitable set and splashed out again , on a full set , bath and sink , (modern, but old fashioned) individual chrome taps . nice looking seemingly well made . fitted the sink taps ,and the hot was an imediate improvement , good flow ,and no untoward action ,nice feel . the cold however gave a sort of hammering (vibration ,and after a lot of experamenting, I found that turning the isolater valve(inline) down , almost off, reduced the flow and the hammering was no longer a problem , however it now does not like being turned on after being left a while ,it has a resistance almost as if its dragging the washer of its seat but takes several turns ,before finally opening with a loud "thud" . the basic system and pipes are unchanged (40 years) and never had this before ,, obviousely, just continuing to buy new taps all of the time is out of the question , any advice would be great ,I am hoping I can just fit different washers or something. thanks , Graham :sad::bigcry:

need to get your plumber to supply and fit taps to suit your system, be it high or low pressure.

I live in a remote village ,there is only one plumber for 15 miles ,and I would not ask him to paint the outhouse door . , all I want to know is why is this particular tap a problem ,its extremely close in design concept to the old washer based tap that came out , I have had to learn most of my life to "do it myself" after being fleeced by local tradesmen, and end up undoing thier damage myself. so an explanation from someone who knows "cause and effect" with regards to taps would be nice. I have some machinary ,and if nessessary I can machine new internals to suit .

split the body and swap over the hot and cold see if you still get the same problem though i would agree the tap appears to be faulty

Sounds to me like you have a low pressure hot system and mains cold? The first taps you had were probably high pressure so your hot tap had low flow through it. These new taps are low pressure so your hot works fine but cold shudders. Try putting a cheap pressure reducing valve on instead of the isolating valve and reduce the pressure to the same as the hot
