Hello, I wish to replace the taps in the bathroom however the gate valve is stuck in the open position on the cold feed into the hot water cylinder. Rather than drain the cold tank to shut off the hot water, can you get a bung to go into the hole in the cold water tank ? If so where can I get one?

Many thanks,

Neil

It is easier and better for a diy er to just drain the tank. It will only take 5-10 minutes to drain and then fit a new valve while it is drained.

Stick a parsnip or a carrot in the outlet. This really works plus it counts as one of your five a day!

Once bunged crack open the gate valve compression nut slowly and have your new valve on hand ready for a quick change over.

they get stuck from not being used for ages
what have you tried to loosen the valve?
spray a bit of lubricant on the tap spindle and use a set of grips/spanner to get it moving

Thanks for your reply.

I have just used the cork from my whisky bottle (xmas pressie) in the cold tank outlet. The hot water stopped coming out of the taps after about 15 seconds! Worked a treat!

Hi Steve, I couldn't find anything in B&Q, hence the message. Anyway I have found that the cork from my whisky bottle works a treat. Once I plugged the oulet in the cold water tank the hot water stopped coming out of the taps in the bathroom after about 15 seconds! I have replaced the cold tap and will now do the hot tap. No doubt I will be contacting you if it all goes wrong!

You'll have to drink all the whisky now then - cant put the cork back in the bottle!
