Hi Midge, Air pocket reduce the risk of water hammer. One often finds the connection to ballvalves in cisterns is formed with a branch some 6" from a stopped end. The air trap created was designed to allow the compression of the air which stopped the Newton effect of the incompressible of water reverberating within the pipe.
