I advise people to seriously consider something else while the going is good . .. .

Why would you want to join a trade where there isn't enough work for many who have years of experience? There are guys I know with 10 years on the tools and they still cant get on any site . . .

The domestic scene is worse as there are far too many plumbers (in the South East) competing for far less jobs than when people actually had expendable income!

You have to be aware of the pitfalls - the building trade is not a very good option these days. I have a friend who is a sparky and is in a far worse situation due to lack of work . . ..

Get into IT, web design or anything up and coming. Plumbing is not the cushy option everyone thinks it is!
Very good advice. Plus rather than give your money to the leeching training centres you're far better off paying a plumber to teach you or take you on IMO. If I had the skill for it Web Design is something I would definitely consider going into. Or something that is aimed at people setting up on their own, like becoming a van signwriter or something like that. Or if its a trade you want, become a tiler, minimum outlay to start up and the worse damage you can do is break a tile

I know of plumbers now working in pubs and tesco to earn a crust, 2 sparkies who have left the trade and a good chippies who has left the tools and just lost his house! Why people think construction is a good option at present is beyond me, i have to rely on rental income to boost plumbing income whereas years back the rents were a bonus!

Every industry and service business is suffering at the minute, as for web design. Web designers have to compete with india which they do a website for half or third of the price. Some designers are on equivalent to web design. Computer programmin and security is a different matter but they are less jobs for them now.

Grass is always greener.

Try and an apprenticeship with an oil rig company.

Couldnt agree more times have changed, years ago an apprenticeship was the only realistic way into the trade, with the current economic climate, I think the only realistic way of getting any trade is to go out and grab it by the balls yourself get your training and qualification finished and enter the workplace with confidence in your own abilty and a willingness to learn from your peers and superiors. If I was looking for a plumbers mate/trainee I would take someone who has been on a fast track course over a day release apprentice every time, you have aleady demonstrated an eagerness to progress and learn and a can do attitude by the simple fact that you went out there and spent hard earned money on getting qualified gave up your free time to go on these courses and had the ability to pass the exams. In a further education college a high percentage of any class is filled with timewasters and muppets with the same mentality they had at school who will mess around and disrupt the learning of others. I say good on you and good luck dont listen to the naysayers some of them are just hanging on to the past.

Amen well said

I suppose at least plumbing cannot be out sourced . . ..

However it is not the solid option that it used to be. there are always industries that are thriving and others which are struggling.

Take property development - that is going as strong as ever in some areas contrary to some thinking that the market would crash completely . . ..

It is a shame it costs so much to get in to but i would consider it certainly!
