copper pipe socket former?

View the thread, titled "copper pipe socket former?" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

Unless you're in a remote rural area I can't see the point in stocking loads of fittings in the van?? That's what Screwfix, Toolstation, B&Q & the Plumbers' Merchants are for. You must spend a fortune on derv carrying that lot around?? The customer will pay for your trip to pick up materials.

If you buy in bulk you save a lot. I buy 15mm Yorkshire fitting cheaper than screwfix end feed.
You do have to buy a considerable amount. 300 15 York elbows at a time.

I used to drive past your house alot. Don't work up rct much anymore so haven't been past in a while
Cool I've moved house now and no where to put trailer also the bigger van I got has not got a tow bar only the small one and I haven't used it for over a year so scraped it

I was taught at college that these socket formers were against regs as the stretch the pipe leaving it weaker as a joint.

Don't know how much truth is in that. Didn't really have the greatest of confidence in my tutors

Can anyone shed some light on this

you cant use them on gas.

in theroy when you create the socket on new copper tube you are thining out the wall, so yes it wont meet current BS standards for tube thickness/fittings spec. They are really best suited for adapting old, exisiting copper which is thicker/ better suited.

Neil T, it's your birthday fella!! I found a combined 15/22mm socked former in the bowels of our workshop today. PM me your contact details my good man & I'll post it to you.

we used to use them all the time but fittings are cheaper now so no need the 22mm ones can be used to make a double depth socket to use like a slio coupling between two fixed points i always intended getting the handle of a 15 one turned down to do the same but never got round to it anyway the 15mm ones used to snap anyway

Sounds like you work for BG ! using Yorkshire fittings , Or some other large Co who need to charge top Dollar.

No small company, do it once do it right! Buying cheap crap never works. We tried a cheap 15mm comp tee ( cheaper than the screwfix own brand - which is ok) had to pay £2900 to landlord as flooded gf flat. Nut split on tee.

Solder ring fittings by Graham's are rubbish, plumb Center ones are ok as are screwfix. The yellow tub flux is same as centerbrand. Laco is same as no frills heat activated flux.
