Nothing on here about d day so a quick hats off to all the oldies and anyone's gramps that took part in this got my respect

what they achieved was a miracle, if they hadn't won, then we would have had to have our chimneys swept at least once a year by law and gas technical work could only be done by those qualified, seems winning wasn't all good seeing how Germany works now, but respect all round to all who took part in what ever way means or form

I've been fairly tearful at quite a few of the stories, not afraid to admit it.

My Grandad was involved, although I don't think he landed on D Day itself. He was an armoured car driver in 7th Armoured Div, the "desert rats" and made it all the way through North Africa, fought in Italy and then in Normandy. By the time I knew him in the 60s and 70s he was the most peaceful, quiet man imagineable.

Hats off to them all - the whole generation.

joking aside there a very few souls today that would stand and fight like those chaps did. No back bone anymore. Complete and utter respect for everyone of them and their families can't imagine what they gave up in order to protect their and our futures

Been watching the old boys being interviewed on the news and a few started tearing up..Gave me a right lump in my throat. One old boy said whilst they were landing if they saw anybody drowning or injured they weren't allowed to help. Those were orders..Awful and just kids at the time a lot of em.

just watched "the longest day" again, probably doesn't even approach how bad it was for them but gives an inkling.

My gramps was in a blue suit and got sunk at least once, had to reverse back to port in another having had their bows blown off by a torpedo. Funnily enough they spent less time at sea than the boys now due to the unreliability of ships back then!

Respect to all those who fought against Nazi Germany. It must have been a scary situation for the troops landing on D Day. It was madness all the killing on both sides, but Hitler had to be stopped.
Nowadays the British governments & no doubt the looney lefties would just negotiate with Hitler & give in to him.

There was one old boy interviewed said he came across an old german soldier who had actually been the other side of the fence from him in the same battle. They went for a quiet drink as comrades in arms as they could each understand exactly what the other had endured.

Freedom of speech, I say for the pastor, within reason, - that was one of the things fought for on D day.

not dday but A nice story i heard a bout ww2 an old boy and his Italian wife told me of how they met. he got caught by the Nazis in his teens and sent to a pow camp. he and a few others escaped and he ended up hiding in a barn on the Italian border.. The family were against fascism so took him in at there risk..They had a daughter who took a fancy to him. The family helped him get across the boarder.After the war he traced them and he and the daughter got together, married and they both live near me..(hope he wasn't pulling my leg cos it sounds like a film).

Having been to the D-Day beaches, seen the graves and the monuments I can only imagine the hell those soldiers went through (on both sides). Too many lives lost and too many wasted today that have no respect. The whole area of France is very moving and poignant and hope no one ever forgets the lesson that cost such a great sum, paid for with the lives of those so brave.

Masses of respect to all of that generation, just about everyone in the country did their bit in some way. I wish the veterans would get together and write a book about their experiences and it be included in the school curriculum to teach some of todays teenagers about loyalty and respect.

My wife had a work colleague who unfortunately passed away three years ago. She new he had been on a MTB evacuating troops from beaches. On the 65th anniversary of D-Day she asked if he would be going over. His reply was "I've been once and the buggers were non too friendly so I ain't going back".

other side of the story was a couple I knew who where friends with the old ma in law, he was german and met his english wife as a pow over here whilst working on her dads farm, he never went back, they werent all evil just normal like our lot.
