-- Large drop in a small volume

-- small drop on a large volume

for same sized loss ?

or some other reason

Apart from the strength testing thing, it is also about volume.

On big stuff you work out the volume of the pipe then multiply it by the grm (gauge readable movement) and a constant factor(s) to determine the test duration.
Say the volume was 1m3 the ttd (test time) would be 21mins (depending what you are testing) with a water gauge or 5 minutes with an electronic.
Over about 1.5m3 volume you are onto a 24hr test with a gauge.
Btw if you ever see the grid mains layers testing their stuff they will be using a gauge.
