Do I need to replace my old hot water cylinder

Hello,

I have an old hot water cylinder with an immersion heater (not central heating). This is basically used to heat all hot water coming from the taps. Will it save money on bills to replace the whole hot water cylinder? if so how much? The element has been replaced recently.

I already have a jacket and a timer to make sure its not heating water most of the day.

well, the new cylinders are foam lagged, which is alot better than an old cylinder with a jacket. I wouldnt change it until it started leaking, unless it is looking on the tacky side

Its the immersion heater that uses the power not the cylinder. You can get heavily insulated cylinders of course which would no doubt keep the hot water, hotter, longer. But you would have to calculate exactly how much you would save.

Do you have a boiler or such?

You could use an instant hot water on demand system if its possible. But without knowing the layout, its hard to say.

All I could say, is that a modern cylinder with a thick blown on jacket is probably quiet a bit more efficient than a normal cylinder with a loose jacket.

But whether the savings in power would cover the cost of replacing the existing cylinder with a new one in a reasonable 5 year time scale, you would have to work out.

At my local merchants they were stuck with an old Combi Cylinder, brand new still in stock, which was manufactured before they had to be made with "Blown on" foam insulation.

Everytime a plumber came in for a new Combi cylinder they tried to off load the old one, but to no avail.

They eventually started calling it the "Phil Collins" cylinder,,,,,I had to ask why of course, just too curious,,,,,the answer???

Stick an old quilt or blanket on it and it will do for years🙂

£400 fitted 20% more efficent x 5 years divided by your anual heating bill should give you a ball park figure, obviously depending where you live etc.
other-wise i would wait till it starts going streaky or corroding onthe outside then replace.
