Is econ 7 not just electric heaters with heavy breeze blocks in the bottom? Used to be.

Seems like he wants rads? Megaflow? nothing in loft?

Wouldn't mind accompanying you (as a spectator) if you're close by.

Cheers

no gas in the property, first job im doing like this and i can tell its going to be a headache lol, im jus trying to figure out how and what goes where, aint fitted one for over a year now.

Thats not a problem, providing they've got pressure and flow etc, just get a direct cylinder. Providing again you can get rid of (my brain has gone, its cold) the pipe coming from the tundish.

Some local authorities allow you to run this into a soil pipe, mine doesn't and has to exit the building safetly

Heaters are a separate entity.

brains frozen? your brain was never there in the first place, go fishing somewhere else

shouldnt have put that sorry

keep economy 7 clock onto direct unvented cylinder?

bob the plumber i cud rip you to pieces right now but just for the fact of not getting banned from this site im not going to, yes i do have my unvented ticket im reigistered with NICEIC for it, i just dont ever fit them in cause i never get the unvented jobs, its alwas boiler installs, gas pipes, maintenance, servicing e.t.c, and all i was doing was trying to get sum advice(aint that what this site is all about asking others for advice) sorry that we dont all have your god given knowledge, ive never come across economy 7 so its jus a big blow and i think im getting muddled in the blank patches,, but listening to others advice i have done sum research and am understanding more about it.

Anyway thanks to all the others that have helped me, am going to do it tomorow as ive figured it all out and done a drawing(always helps lol) cheers guys

As said, it's just a case of fitting a direct unvented cylinder. A lot of direct cylinders come with two immersion heaters (often indirect will have just one).

You are supposed to wire the top immersion heater to a 'booster' switch. Be this a timer (like a Horstman Electronic 7, the best timer for economy 7 in my opinion) or just to a switched fused spur.

The lower immersion is to the economy 7 feed.

Now some electrical suppliers will feed the whole house on economy 7 through the designated hours. This means there is no cut in supply when the economy 7 isn't in use, just a change in tariff. In short, two meters, but one feed.

Other times, you will find that the economy 7 feed will more than likely be dead when you are at work. (It will be activated by either a mechanical timer or a radio switch). This is the reason why you need a separate supply to the booster (top immersion heater). If the owner wants ho****er and the lower immersion is broken, they must be able to activate the booster.

In systems where there is a permanent live but two separate meters, this isn't an issue. The Horstman Electronic 7 timer won't allow heat to both elements at the same time (hence why I rate it so highly).

In systems where the economy 7 goes dead during working hours, then the booster feed must be taken from a permanent supply. (Separately from the consumer unit).

I know this seems like a lot of ramble. However this is very important. I specialised in repairing thermal stores, mainly Gledhill for a couple of years. There is very often economy 7 in play with these.

As people move away from Gas and look more to electric heating, this will become fundamental grass route stuff.

I had one customer who had another engineer say that the supply to the immersion was dead. It wasn't dead. The Radio switch didn't activate the supply to the immsersion until 11.30pm. The element on the heater was blown and thus no heat. Simple repair, took under an hour.

All heating engineers should be clued up on this and the rarer economy 11.

cheers for that dannypipe, yeah done it the other day worked brilliantly, once i got my head round the wiring lol, thanks for the info guys.

this has been of help to me. makes sense how he tank is controlled by the two different systems, but do you know how the storage heaters are controlled to avoid them charging during the high peak electricity rate. with the radio signal version where it is off during the day, i would imagine you can just leave them on, but what about the other version, is there a main timer to the storage heater fuse board in play there?

This is a bit harsh

you also need to inform building control when installing a unvented cylindeer in a property that has not had one installed already ie a replacement unvented cylinder for unvented cylinder
