Electric Water Heater leak

Hi Everyone!

I live in Greece, which has some benefits, though the plumbing is not one of them!

My electric water heater has recently developed a leak from the pressure relief valve connected to the hot water outlet. I have changed the valve once already and all seemed OK, but it has started to leak again when we turn it on. I have not noticed an increase in water pressure in the cold taps, but when I open the hot water tap to release the pressure it is clear that there is a pressure build up in the hot water.

Does anyone know how I could fix this?

Hi. It might be wise to fit a pressure reducing valve on the incoming main supply.

Sorry to need a little more explanation, but when you say, " fit a pressure reducing valve on the incoming main supply", do you mean fitting at the water heater where the main supply comes into it, or at the point where the main supply comes into the house?

Sorry, I have just noticed that my pressure relief valve is fitted to the main supply at the water heater, not the hot water outlet coming from the water heater, sorry!

Should I connect the pressure reducing valve where the pressure relief valve is and leave the relief valve connected as well?

Hi. Its possible that with less demand on the main distribution system (holiday makers gone home) that the mains pressure has increased. Pressure relief valves often fail to reseat after discharging. By fitting a PRV at the point the mains supply enters the building all appliances will enjoy reduced pressure.

Thanks very much for your advice! Though I'm not quite sure how to say "pressure reducing valve" in Greek! Before I do that I'll just check with my neighbours to see if they've had the same problem (we are 9 apartments in the same building), If they have, problem solved, I'll fit the valve, but if not I guess I'll be back on here.
