Hi all,

Little info for you beforehand; Fully time served apprenticeship, plumbing/ gas both domestic and commercial, variety of systems covered. General breakdowns, servicing, maintenance, refurbs on a daily basis in early years. Later some management and other professional experience along way ( Not the call girl type! lol) Been in industry 12 years to date..........

Whats your general opinion/ advice on female plumber starting own business?
Is there a market for female plumber ?
Do you think she can earn a living at it?
What do you think the chances of success are as a female out there are ?
What do you think the risks/ pitfalls are ?
Would you use her to sub certain work out/ recommend her to others?

Any other thoughts and general advice would be greatly appreciated from all you wise people! 😉

Thanks
Toggles

Re: Female Plumber Starting Own Business

Market for female plumbers is good if marketed the right way.

unfortunately to begin with you will have to play to the stereotypes to earn a living. So single and stay at home mums, elderly residents etc they'll be your bread and butter. Once there ticking along nicely your reputation will grow and so will client base.

the hardest problem will be convincing people who you'd like regular and contract work from. Like company's doing referbs and plant rooms.

Theres a a few female plumbers round my way and all play on the pink girlie aspect one has a pink van another has a little smart car with pink writing, can't say it's a bad thing it's less of a weakness and more playing to a strength for one they stand out from the rest as otherwise there just another plumber in a van.

Re: Female Plumber Starting Own Business

Can't see it being a problem Toggles, if you know what your doing your do very well, and if you don't you will struggle simple as that! Good luck.

Re: Female Plumber Starting Own Business

Theres a plastering firm round by mine that's all females

Theres defiantly a market for it for single mum or women living alone but you'll defiantly have to face the stereo types or people knocking your confidence

I'd have a female work for me as long as she can do the job,

Re: Female Plumber Starting Own Business

I cant see a problem, 2 lady plumbers/heating engineers near me.
only problem i can see , and it really doesn't matter if its a male or female starting a business ............. Be prepared , i have said this on here a few times, you think you work hard in your current job, well it isnt even close as to how hard it is to work for yourself.
What i will say is if you have a go , bloody good luck !!!

Hi gasmanrob

Great advice! Thanks 😉
Always been against the pink girly thing as a rule "Stereotyping" and that it states the obvious, used to bore and annoy me. That said, you do make a very good point and valid in that It does Stand out from the rest ! 🙂
Thanks again

Re: Female Plumber Starting Own Business

When I was back in London there was a girly plumber I knew. She got most of her work from married men who felt more secure with their wives not lusting over a male plumber.

Trouble was, though, she was a lesbian and got far more action than I could ever dream of. Or so she told me anyway!

Ho Dancinplumba

Although I am grateful for your support, my post really isn't about the equality war and I don't want to start or be involved in the battle of it. I do plumbing because I love it and am good at it, I've earned my stripes so to speak. I only posted this as I am interested to hear the advice fellow trades people have to offer me, they are the experts after all in our field. I would'nt go into a ladies fashion shop and ask them the question of starting a plumbing business would I ? Relax, its all good 😉

Re: Female Plumber Starting Own Business

When we started Miss Plumb, it was my mrs who started the business sfter walking away from her job in local authority. She is time served, worked in all teh different areas as yourself, and is now a building services design engineer. The thing that she found, and this goes against what people are saying, was that she didnt need to go for the stereotypical single mums or older people, she had a knack of being able to sell herself well to the customers and on average got 75% of the jobs that she priced. Her big downfall came when she did alot of work for a builder who had a contract to refurb council properties. She did 6 full systems and he paid on the dot, then she did another 10 and he paid in dribs and drabs, £100 her and £100 there. This meant she couldnt pay her merchants and had reached her limits for getting gear so as a word of warning, be careful who you work for (obviously this happens to everyone, not just female plumbers), id hate to see you fall foul as she did. Everything has worked out for the best and now she works with me designing ans specing biomass district heating systems and plantrooms.

The fundamentals for succeeding in business are the same for everyone. Make sure you provide a quality service, at competitive rate and people will continue to use and recommend you.
The number of jobs I get simply because I sent a price over when I said I would, turned up when I said I would and take an interest in the home or work required keeps me busy. I am never the cheapest but always do as I have quoted and make sure I respect the customers home. I'm not trying to preach but these simply basics have kept me in business over the last five years with no advertising and just word of mouth referrals, and business has never been so good for the last six months.
Good luck and don't give up, also make sure you have a good bottle of red at home for the days that don't go quite to plan!

Thats an excellent start

Whats your general opinion/ advice on female plumber starting own business?
Is there a market for female plumber ?
Do you think she can earn a living at it?
What do you think the chances of success are as a female out there are ?

From reading the rest of the thread, I'm not sure whether you are intending to

a) run a plumbing business. As a complete non-sequitur, you happen to be female or
b) you plan to run a plumbing business, specifically marketing and promoting yourself as female, and hoping to gain competitive advantage from the latter.

If its the former, then you probably have some minor perception issues to overcome, and no doubt there will be a few thumbless flipwits who think they can increase their standing by belittling you, but nothing you wouldn't get in any of the male dominated fields.

If its the latter, I think that there are probably some great opportunities in areas where there are a large number of relatively well off, single women. I can see it working in (for example) south west London, but not so much in less affluent areas. With a bit of inventive PR, I bet you could get some free marketing from local press.

What do you think the risks/ pitfalls are ?

Notwithstanding the above, its the same pitfalls as every new start plumbing business:

1) Failing to understand the overhead of running a business and therefore underpricing work
2) Giving credit to people who you shouldn't give credit to, and being surprised when they don't pay
3) Not keeping on top of the paperwork - particularly invoicing and credit control
4) Not understanding the difference between cashflow and profit

I reckon 99% of all the bad debts we have ever taken come down to a combination of these factors.

They are the four horseman of the self employed businesspersons apocalypse.

Would you use her to sub certain work out/ recommend her to others?

Only if the quality of work was at least as high as my own.

Any other thoughts and general advice would be greatly appreciated from all you wise people! 😉

Never eat yellow snow.
And if you have false teeth, dont sneeze when standing at a urinal. Although this one is probably of limited value to you.

You're welcome.

Re: Female Plumber Starting Own Business

Toggles, as other have already said, it should not matter a jot whether you're male or female; if you're good at your job and offer a quality service then there is a market for you.

If you choose to market yourself as offering something out of the ordinary by virtue of being a woman, then there is definitely a sizeable niche for you. Lone women, women who have had bad experiences with male tradesmen who have left them feeling intimidated, and don't forget, in that vein, the LGBT sector of society. I have a quite a large number of gay customers, male and female, as I did a job for one gay couple who found my complete lack of prejudice unusual (sad in this day and age, but that's their experience) who then passed my number on.

On the flip side, be prepared for prejudice from some sectors of society. I'm ashamed to admit that some members of my own community (Muslim) would find it hard to accept a woman working in the house. I understand some of the more traditional African people have similar views.

Basically - go for it. Be clever with your marketing and don't pigeonhole yourself. Use your gender as an advantage where you can but don't let it define or limit you.

Personally I wish you the very best - the more equality in the workplace the better as far as I'm concerned. Unless you're in East London in which case forget it, the market's saturated and all the customers are misogynists, even the women... 😛

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender...

That is the preferred term now as it is considered to refer more to biological and psychological imperatives rather than preferences.

LoL, Guys bought me a set back in the day for a giggle, my initiation (among other things) I refused to use them as they were pink and left them in the stores, then they started showing up in the lads toolboxes! when I took the mickey they defended them saying they were nifty for small spaces, so I started pinching them back ! 😉 Fair play to them for being so secure in their sexuality that they would use pink tools, didn't stop the other contractors taking the mick out of them though ! lol

No apologies needed Hammers4spanner, Just giving you as good back in good nature lol 😉

You're right in your comment of advertising as a male plumber, think its not needed as its still expected that a plumber is male. I'm not sure I'll use that angle anyway, yes it works for those that want a female around ( Or helps those avoid me if they dont! haha) The other concern for me, is the security angle, I could get a weirdo request a call out just because I'm female, get me in the house then what ! 🙁 Over cautious I know but its the world we live in.

Question : Why are you calling your Mrs a 'Bird' ? You know birds pick up worms don't you, Not a WORM are you !! LOL 🙂

Hi Toggles, I`ve been reading through and like your responses so far. If your serious about building up the client base then as a business you need to explore every avenue , how much and how far is up to you but being stubborn is not a good mind set to have.
Push the lady & don`t go Pink, Why? Because it`s been done, around me there is every Pink & Lady thing you can think of from sparkies to window cleaners, dog walkers being the most common.

Re: Female Plumber Starting Own Business

well toggles,
i reckon there has to be some market for maintenance and repair in hostels and sheltered accommodations for vulnerable residents who dont feel comfortable with a bunch of hairy assed male plumbers scratching their balls and swearing all day.

secondly

after 12 years in the trade, you must have made some contacts! what you want is a business relationship or two with people whom you have worked for in the past, who are busy enough to need you to subby to them on occaision. you can use this to fill up the week in quieter business building initial stage. you can also sell it to them on the strength of you giving them the odd bit of work if/when you are too busy yourself (you will find when on your own that everybody rings at once and you have to turn stuff down)

good luck, and for christs sake dont kiss croppie, it will end in tears!

i know you wanna stay away from the pink thing, but there is nothing stopping you capitalising on it in a different way.....

simply google lady spark, lady plasterer, decorator and so on in your area. introduce yourself go and swap business cards with each other and if any of their customers need a plumber then bobs your uncle as their customers are already turned on to the idea of female trades. in return you leave a couple of their cards around here and there...

also steer clear of croppies 'pink thing'

Hi Kay-Jay
Thanks for the good advice. I steer clear of shelters and such i if can, covered them in the past because of being female. Had a few expected incidences along the way but started to Draw the line after a big built 15 year old lad with learning disabilities came from nowhere, I turned to find his tilted head and mouth open for poised for action within an inch of my face, lil me pinned at the wall , carers had to pull him off, turned out downs and teenage hormones are a powerful mix! Poor lad threw a classic tantrum because he had been stopped from having a snog! Bless him, was difficult situation though 🙁

Yep, have plenty of contacts, already get work when I want it, so that's good 🙂

You have my word: I wont kiss croppie! lol 😉

Of course if you are willing to give it your best shot, I like a challenge, are you willing to back your comment with money, if so ....let the games begin !!.... PLAYTIME ;D lol

Sadly toggles. When app is around it usually ends in tears. People just cant help bullying a fully grown man who insists on drinking pink drinks.

If you stick arou d im sure you'll get to know everybodies eccentricities.

Heres a few rules I stick by

1) dont mention landrovers
2) avoid croppie at all costs
3) dont accept a drink from adam (app)
4) don't mention landrovers
5) dont mention landrovers.
