Filler valve problem?

Hi all,

This morning for no obvious reason, our toilet has started misbehaving. You flush it, it fills... then once the tank is as full as it should be, water continues to fill into the tank. The level rises to the overflow tube and a gentle but steady flow runs down through the toilet bowl.

My immediate thought was the filler valve. It's a WDI B3300-Y, one year old. The float mechanism is rising when it should, and the sound of the water filling changes when it's up - possibly slows down - but it doesn't stop filling.

I have taken the top off the filler valve to give it a wipe, hasn't fixed it. I suppose changing the filler valve could be an option but if this is a leak caused by something else - or indeed if it is the filler valve but it can be fixed - then I don't want to replace the whole thing. But I'm out of ideas.

Can anyone help?

Thank you!
Joe

Could be a simple washer needing replacing. Take off the top part as before & take out the black washer. Take to a merchants or DIY store & try & find what you need.

In as much as tomlane is right, in my opinion, I'd rather you just replace the filler valve with a new fluidmaster valve and be done with it.

If you consider the amount of time and effort required to take out washer, go down to local merchant, get back, replace washer, .......
It's a waste of time and if you do not know what you are doing, you will end up with a leak worse than you had before you tried to repair the valve

Agree with Village

The fluidmaster pro (with brass shank) costs about £15 nicker

Bail out your cistern, remove the water right at the bottom with a car wash sponge (they are really absorbent), hmm having first turned of the CW supply!

remove filler and bobs your uncle, should take no more than 15-30 mins

Anyone know what a noise coming from the filler valve it could be flushed and then randomly a noise comes out of the tank like a pump going on or a small air compressor like noise .Any thoughts ? Everything seems to be working other wise

That noise is called water hammer. There should be a restrictor fitted to the inlet of the ball valve to stop this. It could also be a low quality valve.
Easiest option is to replace with a better quality ( fit the restrictor ) like fluid master. I know we on here go on about them, but they are good and reliable.

them valves have a large plastic screw on them, try adjusting the screw so the float cup goes down so screw anti clockwise (i think) it may just be its over filling and needs adjusting.

nope that will only change the water level inside the tank

I have the same problem with the first poster, but after the water overflow to the overflow tube for 1 or 2 minutes, it stops. It's a WDI fill valve (1 year old) and I don't know whether I need to change it or not because it always stop after overflowing for 1-2 minutes. I know it's not normal since it worked properly before & started misbehaving with no reason 2 weeks ago. Appreciate any help. Thanks.
