first attempt at plumbing

Hello and glad to find this site and I'll have a lot of questions to ask.
My first question is regarding basin waste pipe,am I on the right page?

I am installing a new basin and the white plastic waste pipe is 1 1/2 inches OD
but the only ones I have found are 32 or 40mm do I need a reducer connection?

Welcome!
1 1/2" is big for a basin. It's normally 1 1/4". The mm sizes are pretty much the same.

32mm - 1 1/4"
40mm - 1 1/2"

be aware that there are two types of waste pipe, for example,

1 1/2" push fit is a different size to 1 1/2" solvent weld!
a compression waste fitting would resolve that.

are you swapping the pipe or the basin, or both??

Thanks lads for your answers. I had bought the wrong size connections (40mm/1 1/2) and took along the solvent connection I had cut and got the similar connections (32mm/1 1/4).
I'm replacing the basin which is a different height and distance from the vertical drain .
I also met a plumber at the store who advised me and gave me a short length of pipe to do the job! It's great to meet people like that I asked for his card in case I give up DIY.
