First fixing basin waste

View the thread, titled "First fixing basin waste" which is posted in UK Plumbers Forums on UK Plumbers Forums.

Hi when first fixing a basin waste pipe on a new build property, for a pedestal basin. Is there a measurement the waste pipe should come up through the floor from the finish wall so that a pedestal trap can be installed so the waste pipe is hidden inside the pedestal?

200mm from finish for pedastal, 550mm from the floor if taken up in the wall. 800mm for fixing noggins for fisher bolts.

depends on the basin some are deeper than others- from what is described think he means from wall to centre of waste rising vertical from floor so its hidden in the ped.

Will be roughly 7.5 inches as I was doing some first fixing like this the other day where they wanted it hidden in the pedestal and not just behind it.

You realy need the dimension of wall to center of waste for the basin your fitting
a true first fix is fitting it all and then removing which is what used to be done especially on high end fit outs
and still is done if theres marble involved

Varies between basins as there are so many different makes & designs out there. Some of the pedestals have a piece of china right in the way of the waste pipe if it were to go vertical from the ped trap.
It might work out about 7 1/2" or 8" from finished wall, but some are less.
Better to have the basin & ped so you can't go wrong but that is a pain having the stuff lying about.
You could always consider leaving the waste longer if you will have acess to it later.

I do plenty of high end stuff and never have stuff maybe a catalogue that's about it

i always prefer to core a hole straight thru the wall and into a hopper head or gulley if i can, then use an adjustable bottle trap inside, in my oppinion thats the best way to do it, but if it must be hidden in the pedestall i wouldn't bother without having the basin on site, or you will look like a total idiot if you get it wrong!!!! not so bad if its too far back to the wall! but it can be a disater if its too far forward!!!!

That's the best way if on a outside wall, but you need a pedestal trap unfortunately if basin with floor pedestal is on an internal wall, which a lot are.
You are spot on about the worry of waste too far out! If it is where the front of the ped sits, then big problem & floor is coming up!
I tend to point this out to people thinking of changing basins or complete bathroom, especially if they have solid floors, but most people pick & buy without first taking advice.

how many of you go to second fix, wanting to use a pedestall trap and then when go to fit it realise it won't fit in the pedestall so have no choice but to take the waste pipe out of the ped using an S trap then 45' it back in.

Stick the waste In the wall lower than the basin then use a telescopic waste so you don't have to get it bang on otherwise as close to the wall as pos with a 90at the top into a trap. If not set the basin up, if you haven't got it moan at the client, first fixing without the gear on site is annoying, if the customer changes their mind or buys something foreign you can't do standard measurements

Waste close to the wall & a 90 degree bend will look amateurish, even if waste is boxed in later.

what sanitary is it? make/model?

if its not been chosen then tell the customer it will be a guess and chargable if it needs altering after then bang it in at about 7 inches.
