My Thermflow unit with integral header tank has the 18mm overflow pipe (about 75mm below rim of tank) running horizontally for about 1200mm before dropping about 1200 mm and continuing with fall to outside.
The float valve failed and the header tank overflowed flooding the house while we were out.
I suspect that if the overflow pipe was vertical for, say, 600mm as it left the tank it would set up a siphon and allow much more water to flow to the outside.
Is there a recommended layout for such overflow pipes - they can't fall at a constant gradient because these units are fitted in a cupboard normally at first floor level.
