I got told that a builder had taken on a load of trainees and he had been paid for them, a handful were over 25 and simply by saying "it's discrimination you have to pay me" the builder got paid money for each trainee.

He received £1,000,000 in total for around 20 trainees.

Now I thought what a load of ....................

but was wondering your thoughts on this,

would you take on a trainee over 25 if you could be paid for it.

do you think it is true or a load of rubbish?

did you know that a new goverment scheme means you will get extra money for 18-24 year olds, this is a new scheme backed by the goverment to try to get people back to work.

thats what I thought, but do you reacon if we said discrimination to the goverment apprecnticeship scheme, then it would make them pay up?

No I think it's nonsense. If the government is willing to give tax breaks to married couples and discriminate against co-habiting partners, who represent a large number of potential voters, they won't mind discriminating against the few over 25s looking for apprenticeships.

I have had a look on website and they say that over 25's get a small preportion of their training fee's paid, wonder how much? but it goes to the college direct.

As we all know being over 25 and wanting to change career is not an easy option because of our living expenses and lack of government funding.

Take into account that the government are only interested in massaging figures and attempting to help the sick, lame and downright lazy back to work I find this hard to believe.

I find it hard to believe that the government is going to help anyone over 25.

There are so many under 25's fresh out of university, degree and everything and a whoping great debt, (goes up to 9 grand a year next year) and can they get a job? No, most are working in Mcdonalds and bars.

Somethings gone wrong somewhere. 😛rrr:

Never a bad time to be in the booze business though!

Doing well? Drink it up. Doing badly? Drink it up.

Work really is the curse of the drinking classes.

Too many people were trying to free load it at uni doing rubbish degrees, media studies, golf, film studies and the like. When I was at school it wasn't an option to stay on my parents told me to go and get a job.

Trouble is the brightest of kids who should go to uni to study science, maths, quantom physics (!) can't afford to go because Blair thought that everyone should have the right.

Other side of the coin, is as you said, when qualified what do they do! my girlfriend works in a bank in London very high up, with no degree, no A levels and only answers to the board of directors, when she employs or interviews people, the not so good degrees get immediately looked over.

If the guy was set up as a government funded training provider, then a £million here or there is small potatoes, but I think that is inflated given the number of students in the group - but he may have more than one group, and may be more than one tutor and it would not take many students to rack up a £million.

I am not sure of the exact figure, but at NVQ2 apprenticeship costs around £14K which is usually divided between the training provider and college (usually part of the same enterprise).

However, it doesn't stop there, because the students can then be assessed for learning difficulties, additional learning support and more funding can be drawn down...etc etc.

As for going to univeristy, don't kid yourselves that that those kids with degrees are going to suffer. While they may be stacking shelves now, when things pick up, they will be the ones in the 30-40K job application bracket - not £6.00-£10.00 per hour that plumbing and NVQs will bring. Seems unfair to me!

also they don't have to start paying back their loans until they are earning over a certain amount.
