Hi all,
Need some advice as to way forwards with customer and boiler.
Was called initially as boiler was indicating 3bar at gauge and seeping through PRV when running.
I visited him initially and had a quick check of the expansion vessel and as thought it was full of water.
He mentioned boiler had last been serviced by BG a year or two ago:rolleyes2: & that they could no longer support boiler due to spares inability
After further discussion with him I said to keep costs down it would be best to check over/service at same time as replacement of the expansion vessel & prv.
Heating worked but water was also intermittently warm but not hot as normally would be the case.
Mentioned best option would be to bite the bullet and replace with a new boiler & suggested Ideal vogue (10 yr warranty) or if on a tight budget the Ideal independent+ C35 with clock and erp rated (7 yr warranty).
Anyway I ended up servicing boiler as he said could not afford new one & changed expansion vessel & prv.
Took burner out as per M.I. & Internal of heat exchanger was caked and boiler internals showing there age.
Cleaned everything up as per manual, recharged system/bled air and fired up boiler, everything worked as per and water was nice and hot again.
Put system through CH demand with several hot water demands to check operation which worked well so shut it down to standby again as house was toasty again.
I started on another job in house that I had been asked to do as well and about an hr later cust came back and said no hot water now.
Checked over and reset/turned off & back on and worked again but again later decided to not work again until I gave the diverter valve a gentle percussion tap.
Said to customer again that boiler was not in great health and that it would likely be the diverter valve actuator/motor being faulty if lucky and that I would need to price one up for him as well as a diverter valve repair kit if available & left him with heating only as they have an electric shower.
I finished off other job as was getting late and said I would get him the pricing within next 48hrs as had a lot of work on. Price mad for diverter valve actuator/motor & would need to replace complete hydrobloc apparently.
Got call today from customer just after finishing work about 4pm , said turned boiler on to get heating going and boiler started up as normal, then made a click noise & died, no lights, nothing.
Implied it was my fault as I was last person who touched boiler which cheesed me off so I explained to him a couple of facts with boiler and pre-existing issues prior to my checks/service.:cuss:
So if you kind ladies/gents could give me some constructive advice as I am going over tomorrow to see him that would be really appreciated.
Personally I am looking at the replacement route as although it is initially a bit expensive he could easily throw £400- £500 in arts and labour into this old boiler and be no better off whereas if a new one was installed he could have 7+ years warranty & peace of mind,
Thanks,
Andy
