Looks like the pipe in the wall is unhelpfully sitting back, you need to find a way to pull it out enough and hold it in position while also trying to screw on the compression fitting.

You could do that by pulling it out and driving a short wood screw into the gap between the board and pipe, that should get some purchase and hold it in position or maybe even use two.
 
Havent opened the links but if the pipe does spring back as suggested above, can you pull the pipe forward and use a jubilee clip to hold it in postion.
