I've just bought a Honeywell 3 port motorised valve as a direct replacement for the existing unit....or so I thought.

On closer inspection it looks like the existing is a 28mm valve with added lugs to reduce to 22mm which makes the simple drop in replacement impossible.

Couple of questions. Why the bigger size?

Was it a bit hopeful to expect a straight drop in? Even the dimensions of the latest 28mm model appear short.

Older valves had female iron threads rather than compression fittings. By the time you get a male iron to compression coupling in they end up larger than a modern valve. No option but to extend the pipe work to suit the new valve.

Thanks all for your replies.

Spot on Mike..

Having spoken to the Honeywell Tech Support to be told that the same code V4073A was still available, subject only to size difference, 22/28mm, I didn't think to re-check or measure the fittings.

However you are correct, it's a 22mm valve that looks bigger due to the female inserts and the good news is it's still available.
Honeywell support retrieved the situation and i've one on the way from PTS.

For the record it's the numbers after V4073A that determine the style and size.

Also woth noting that acording to honeywell 22mm 3 ports can only flow up to 13kW of heat, what size boielr do you have fitted?

I don't know off the top of my head. It's a 22 year old Potterton Netaheat and has not let me down (yet)....

I'm surprised rust hasnt killed it off by now.

On reflection it has let me down a few times of late. The overheating(?) switch underneath sometimes needs re-setting, primarily when we've drained down and struggled to clear airlocks.

The plan is to get another boiler or different set up which i'd best start a new thread on....
