I was working at a house today and the system was back boiler with copper cylinder. Now, for some reason the cylinder didnt have a hot water stat. He said it has always been like that.

Did they used to install sysytems like this? I have never seen it before. The guy said that the water is not scalding.

Strange

I've seen lots like this and as Simon said all you can do is advise, I'm guessing the customers happy with the way it is though.

As above, I have only ever seen one back boiler( and I have seen a few) system , where there is a stat on the cylinder.

As Simon says, if they dont want it you acnt force them. All you can do is to tell them the benefits of having one.

thanks for all the replies chaps. More than i expected. I did offer to fit a stat but also said i was not sure if it was in the regs or not. But, as you say, the guy is happy with the way it is. So i shall call him up the morrow and let him know.

cheers guys

Wasn't there an accident couple years ago where cylinder had no stat boiled over melted tank in loft space which sent scolding water down through ceiling onto a sleeping child??? Personally i would advise them to get on fitted imo

I've seen quite a few round my way, gravity hot water & pumped central heating. Customers won't change it because its never let them down and attitude is 'why fix what aint broke' (hows that for English, slipped into a northern tongue there)

The accident was down to a thermostat in an immersion heater failing. This caused the water to boil over into the cold water storage cistern which had been inadequately supported. The cistern collapsed sending 50 gallons of scalding water through the ceiling onto the child below. It is because of incidents like this that all immersion heaters are required to have a non self resetting thermal cut out.

Anyway back to back boilers and hot water cylinders. As has been said above it was common practice to install a gravity hot water system that purely relied on the boiler stat to regulate the temperature. The cost of fitting a thermostat to the cylinder is prohibitive in most cases due to the need to fit a 28 mm zone valve, cylinder stat and wiring alterations. You're easily looking at a days work for quite a small benefit.
