My bro's Hot water cylinder keeps resetting itself, it is a direct cylinder, heated purely by the immersion, the immersion heater keeps resetting, meaning he has no hot water. I have replaced, the thermostat, no luck, the whole immersion, no luck. he has been on an electrical forum and they reckon its the tank. But I don't understand how a brand new immersion would break in a few days. They are definetly the correct ones, the ones for hard water, from my local merchant.

No, I think it is cable as was frayed when I cut it back, The sleeving literally fell off, but this shouldn't make it reset itself/ over heat, should it?

Do you mean it's tripping on overheat, it's little button you reset on the heater under the cap? If yes swap it, I've had faulty ones of these from new.

I did, swapped just the thermostat once and then the whole thing with new thermostat again, both still causing problems

I fitted new immersion last wk and it leaked through the thermostat pocket - I was not impressed neither was the merchant when I nearly threw it at him it was the last job home on a fri :-(
