how many gas registrations can you have

as above, i'm looking into starting another business installing renewables and was wondering if i would have to go through the whole new registration process to be listed as the new companies gas engineer or would my current registration allow me to sign for both companies. i may just have to subby myself out to myself!!

I would have thought you only need one. I sub to a firm and do my own work and I only use the one. It would seem pointless to have to have two. Although gassafe like to take our money so it would not suprise me if they would recommend you have two

i wasnt thinkin so much about the subbing (that was just tongue firmly in cheek) but could i be the registered engineer with two different companies with two sepoerate business registrations and numbers. but without having to go through the whole process of being inspected and having an probationary period aswell as having to shell out nearly £500 for the pleasure

I Have spoken to Gas Safe about this very subject and Like all firms yes they are willing to take your money and you can be the registered engineer on a number of firms if you wish

yes, as unguided has said you can register more than once. I asked in December as i wanted to join under my own name even tho i was still with another firm. They said it was fine and they did not even need to tell the firm i was with. So you dont even need to tell yourself! 🙂

well thats ok cos i dont think i'd be very happy if i come home one day and told myself that i was going to be working for myself for a different company and i wouldnt be havin to pay for it cos i already have!!!!!!!!

you can be registered with as many companies as you like/need, to be added to a companies list they pay £63 and GSR check you have the right quals, only when you create a new registration would an inspection be required, and technically you go on 3 months probation, but if you are currently working in gas and start up your own firm to do your own work you will get a cursory visit in 3 months, as you are obviuosly experienced and already working the risk is minimal

i rang GSR up about this and as Kirkgas said, i wouldnt have to do the probationary period, they will just come and inspect some woirk that ive already done. But they do want the full registration fee (no surprise!!)

You need to check with gas safe but the registration and the operatives can be thought of as two different things. You can be an operative for as many companies as possible.
If you run two separate ltd companies they both need separate registrations because they are defined as different legal businesses.
It used to be the case that a company could have NO operatives but still be registered and this would be the cheapest solution.
For registration with no operatives you have to be subcontracting and your test would be that you have systems in place to ensure your subcontractors are qualified, registered, insured.
Of course your other company provedes the subcontactor - you.
Its all paperwork which ever way you do it.
It may be simpler & cheaper to stick with one company but have two divisions, so you still have one registration and one set of accounts and one lot of returns to HMcustoms & companies house...
By 2 divisions I mean trading names. You can trade under as many names as you want so long as there is no intention of fraud.
