Its great to know exactly how much each appliance uses, I wish I had a smart meter to make it easier.
Gotta remember though its not only electric! Dishwasher may only use few pence of electric per cycle but some dishwasher tablets are up to 30p a pop! Think about that next time you skip on good old handwashing..

You got me thinking I always set my dish washer to come on in the small hours so checked what it costs per cycle, taking away the 2p/h base load it worked on at 14p & as I buy our tabs a Aldi I recon thats around 25p for the 50degC setting mind you not including the salt & rinse aid.

What a sad old man I have turned into !!!!

Smart metering is NOT compulsory here, you can refuse it.

When they have done the big, government funded rollout, and they start to charge different rates by time of day, they'll start to penalise those that haven't got them by only offering higher rates.

However if you've got a PV system then deemed export is only paid whilst they can't measure it, and smart meters will be able to measure export...

Win some, lose some.

You can buy a meter cheaply that monitors your electricity use and puts it into pence per hour.
I think you get a clamp part for the supply in and a portable meter.
Really brilliant to watch how the pence will drop just switching a light bulb or two off, or some appliances that were on standby.

Not so brilliant part: the one I got to try out had no way of taking into account power factor, so it made my kitchen fluorescent lights look as though they consumed 110W, when the actual answer was 55W (tube was 40W rated).

In fairness, most modern fluorescent fittings have much better power factor than the ones I had, so this may well not be something that affects most people.
