I had an absolute nightmare this morning. First job of the day, swap a pump and valves on a boilermate 2000. Thinking it would be a nice easy one. Turn off the power, drain down, swap pump and valves. All going well, fill it up, no leaks which is always a bonus haha. Turn the power back on and try to get it running, but it appears there is no demand for the boiler. Bit odd, then I notice the display is blank on the pcb. Turns out the pcb has decided to blow just but flicking the power either on or off. New board is £185+vat and none in stock anywhere, explained to the customer what happened and they took it quite well. Still cant help but feel they will think its my fault even though it isn't. What do you guys do in this situation, do you take the hit on the part or maybe offer to fit for free etc. I don't see why I should pay, but its just a bit of a crap situation to be in.

It's unfortunate, bit these things happen! You can't be expected to take the hit!! I know I would not!

Maybe do a bg trick & suggest that the wrong size fuse was in the spur 😛 that would be a get out of jail free card!

I know the feeling tho, you do think customer will blame you lol

Have a disclaimer , get custard to sign it when u arrive for repair. Also includes your hourly rate to rectify any issues that may occur during service / repair. T&c clearly denote diffrrnce between service and repair.

Do you actually have t&c's when you do boiler repairs? I am just so annoyed that flicking a damn switch has caused over £200 worth of damage, it just makes me look bad which I really don't like as most of my work is recommendations.

Didnt some old greenstar boilers do the same with power button / fan blow? Can anyone remember because I don't want a similar thing to happen to me! How can we avoid it? Leave boiler on and just kill main 3 amp fuse?

Yeh will send u a pm with them on tomorrow.

I personally don't do t&c,s for ordinary customers. I think it's to scary for most, I definately wouldn't take the hit either. Just talk to them and offer to leave the board with them.

did a pcb on a big thermal store which had 2 pumps when I worked for a company fitted the new board and it blew straight away - found one of the pumps had shorted blowing track on board before fuse went . glad I was not working for myself as board was approx. £220
