I have an Ideal Icos HE12 conventional boiler that has developed a leak in the past few months and wondered if anyone may be able to advise what the possible causes could be.

It has leaked on three separate occasions, but it is not a constant leak. On the previous two occasions it has leaked, after a couple of days it stopped and carried on working without problems for several weeks. I had a heating engineer have a look, but by the time they came it had stopped leaking. They suggested that it can only be coming from the condensate trap or the pipes above the boiler. It is not coming from either of those places, though.

The most recent leak occurred a couple of days ago. I turned the CH and HW off (I left the boiler switched on), closed the main water supply, and drained all the hot water in the system. It continued to leak after that and I have managed catch around half a pint of water. I have since turned everything back on. The boiler is working, but still leaking, although the amount of water leaking out does seem to be reducing.

I have the base plate off at the moment and the source of the leak is not visible. It appears to be coming through casing above the elements that are exposed by removing the base plate and then it gathers on the outer edge of the boiler. The first time it leaked the water was coming from the opposite side of the boiler. That area is completely dry now, though.

I wondered if it was possible that it is something simple that might be causing the leak. If it sounds like something more serious then I'm not going to throw anymore money at this boiler, With hindsight I should have changed it a few years ago. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Sorry my friend, i can understand you trying to find a the leak but you really should get one of us guys to find it .

Don't worry about that. I have no intention of fixing it myself.

I just feel it wouldn't harm to have some advice before I get someone in. I've already had someone in who has charged me £45 quid to say they can't see any leak. A couple of years ago I had a problem and another engineer confidently stated the heat exchanger had gone and said I need to get Ideal to do a one off fix. That led to me paying £300 for Ideal to come and say there was nothing wrong with it.

That's where I'm coming from here.

Appreciate that but we cannot tell you what is wrong in case you do attempt to repair it.
